Kids athletics cancelled, and so took a major 3 hour romp in Villa pamphili covered with inches of snow! Awesome time with family, there were people moving on snow with anything from surfboards to regular xcountry skiis.

That's pretty impressive lactate levels, con-vi-cious...

Feeling great, no less...

37' with some gusty, cold winds.....ah, winter running......after the three day respite, the ankle felt better than it had in some time....first 20'-ish there was some mild tightness....got worse after that with at least one "OW" MOMENT....ice and yoga when done....let's see what tomorrow brings....

40' on both Thurs and Sat....kept things on the slow side and was able to avoid the "ow" moments.....Ache-illes still stiff and sore, but I can get around without limping....albeit slowly.....day off today.....will give it another go tomorrow....

Reached the saturation point with work, so headed to the Hinder Binder X-C ski race on Saturday.

The Rib Lake trails claimed one of my buddies skis, but he managed to limp it home with a floppy tip in 2:05.

The sinuous 23K took me 1:44:38. Placing 18th of 31 finishers, it was as good a race as I've had this winter.

Course conditions were excellent. Brilliant clear blue skies and 30F temps made it a fine day to be in the forest and alive.

Tree tapping is proceeding nicely, with the low snow levels enabling much better mobility than last year.

80% of the 12,000 taps are set. Should finish on Tuesday.

Next Saturday it's up to Hayward for the American Birkebiener . Goal for the 34K is 4:00. That should put me somewhere midpack in this annual gathering of the clan, 10,000 strong.

Easy as she goes 02.... tpcb, I'll be watching the progress of those fleet Italians for a bit next Saturday AM.

The Italian elite have ruled the top 10 at the Birkie, like a bunch of Kenyans at any major marathon.

Started late morning, not sure how many miles or pace to run but instead, just got my lazy..don't feel like ..running today out the door. Amazes me, once I start running or take the first step on the pavement that it triggers my body to follow...arms start swinging or take position in a manner that comes naturally...pump/angle forward and back. Legs/knees lifted up and down in a rthymic movement. Feel the body move forward, with the head tilted slightly forward or back depending on the surface ... uphill, down or straight.

Today, I feel "alive" . Temps are cool and the sky is overcast. And yet, I keep moving forward ...pass other runners, joggers, walkers and bikers. They see me coming, running towards them anticipating a greeting, a nod or silence. I greet accordingly and keep on moving forward... enjoying the run, the feeling of pushing my body forward and clicking away the distance/the miles. 12 miles total.

13.5 miles, discovered a few new trails a few miles away from me. Pretty awesome. 4th week averaging 90 miles.

I'll check this Birkie stuff too, although i admit i have never followed competitiv xc ski very much...but in some way i do wish i had done it more in my childhood instead of all that alpine...

Alpine is fine. Places like Steamboat, Ajax, and Snowmass spoiled me for the mundane knolls of the Midwest. So I took up the X-C thing back in the mid 70's.

Skiing the Birkebeiner in the late 70's, I discovered elderly Norwegians serve up ample quantities of humble pie to youthful 2:20xx American marathoners.LOL.

Now that race from "winery to wivery" really has my curiosity piqued. Are we talking about an Italian version of the German's "fascing"(sp.?) Or a simple , but poignantly Fruedian slip on the keyboard.??

In either case, my imagination is running wild.

2.4 miles with Colonel. New snow and 30F made it a fresh morning to get out. 20:37 minutes of running and 5 minutes of situps , push ups, and stretching.

With the trees tapped ahead of schedule, it's time to catch up on errands.

warm up on the infield (some snow still unmelted from lane 2 to 5), then watchless, in lane 1, deserted, 5k worth of 200m fast 200m slow, a keynote workout to feel pleasantly sinusodial (but actually my breathing was ok)

i re-read what i wrote and, heck yes, it was a typo, but what a great Freudian Typo! There are several others in my post not nearly as exciting... it was supposed to winery to winery, which as a standalone could be judged to be adventurous (i'll let you know if we pull it off) but, indeed, winery to wivery...!!!.... I was roLOLLing on the floor as i read your post as it has happened many a time on this thread...thanks doooooode...

Friday:AM Ran 3.4 miles with Colonel on the regular side roads. PM:Waxing skis ,etc.

We have been on this thrad for quite a while...kinda like watching the Muppet Show...

nudged things slightly north of 40' on Tues. and Thurs.....still keeping things 5-10% slower than usual....no, not walking, but close....Ache-illes slowly showing improvement, but there is still some soreness/stiffness....planning to give it another go tomorrow....welcome back, Bushy....how's the harvest?...

I ran 10 miles earlier @ my gym treadmill. Felt pretty good. Thought I was done but for some reason I had an "urge" to run more or get my frustration out tonight...

It's 7:30pm and the sunset has gone and yet, I have the urge to run to the 'top' of the hill. It's only 1.5 miles and back, I think and it's a climb--sort of like the heart break hill in Boston. But who cares, I am in the 'mood' to run, leave my Garmin behind and run on 'pity' or 'anger' or whatever i feel like....right now, it feels dangerous and yet exciting--to run on a whim...

I take off, it's dark and I allow the community lights and passing cars w/their bright lights guide me to the top of the hill. I feel the 'coolness' of air, the danger of the night-yet, I proceed to climb to the top. It curves and winds and climb until I reach my destination. I feel the danger of the darkness and continue onward or lets say 'downward'. I hear my breathing, my silent cries and my feet hitting the pavement but I keep going forward. I see my (grateful life, family and future) in front of me--running forward, pushing the pace towards them and realize whatever doubts I have while running, it will be erased with sensible stride, effort and pace. I run because I have a purpose in life and I have to remind myself everyday when I think otherwise...

Total run for today 13+. Couldn't be more grateful.

Revisited the venerable Birkebeiner trail for my 13th sojourn over it's sinuous wandering ways and never ending hills.

13 being the number it is, I managed to arrive at the start without my timing chip....no clue yet as to it's whereabouts.

But that's strictly a secondary concern at this stage of life. The blessing of getting out in the northwoods for a 4 hour ski, amidst an international fraternity of like minded souls is the nugget bestowed.

The weather complied with 10F at the beginning. Calm air and sunshine brought it up to 27F at noon. My skis ran fast and my legs held up to place me somewhere in the top 1/3 of the wildly bedecked horde.

The skies are still blue, and Providence is still at the helm.

I do love me some Ringo, tpcb....was on a road trip this weekend, so took the opportunity to shut down the Ache-illes for a few....thought the extra rest would do it some good....as the bride would say, "that's what you get for thinking".....completed 42', but it was a bit of a struggle....kinda sore walking around now.....hopefully tomorrow it will feel better....
