Disclaimer: I like Ben and have posted in the past that I'm a fan.
I feel like the criticism is harsh, people have been complaining about many of the London Marathon YouTubers sugarcoating or trying to spin the narrative after a bad race in recent weeks.
His Comrades video isn't an easy watch, but I didn't feel like he was trying to manipulate the narrative or make up an excuse - he was very open about the fact he had a bad race and the time was not what he hoped or felt like he was capable of. It's hard to understand what people want, if not that? A slightly more disingenuous swing and a miss narrative?
I think his authenticity is one of the reasons why he's one of the more popular influencers.
I'll admit that I, too, respect him.
For me, the issue is the fact he doesn't NEED to do these things (big events, endless travel, etc). I feel he could earn the money he needs to making videos that aren't race-related.
The guy travels SO much, so it appears he's making enough money. However, I can't believe the money from this video will be enough to fund the trip to SA, then the random visits to Chamonix or wherever he's heading to after.
I feel he needs to calm down, ground himself, stop spending the entire year travelling, and enjoy running, not racing.
This would also allow him to have a clearer head to focus on more good content. I honestly think his shoe reviews are up there with the best, most honest, and most transparent. He provides worthwhile knowledge, and has tried SO many that he's got great comparisons, etc.
I can't help but feel he's stressed about earning enough money to fund the lifestyle (including a flat in London) yet he could make it all so much simpler by going back-to-basics.
