And even San Francisco took the homeless off the streets in advance of the US-China summit and an international conference.

Now we need to re-establish bail in the cities so we can keep repeat offenders in jail and push back on these permissive DAs.

The Dems are taking their urban lead in elections for granted...they need to stop committing own goals and govern places smartly.

And of course Rs are missing an enormous opportunity by sticking with Trump and therefore making it impossible for most city people to vote Republican. If the Rs put a Romney type in charge of the party they'd pick up a lot of people, maybe even myself included. But we Kollege types see that Trump and the current R party can't govern and are intending to dismantle democracy if put in power again. They are telling us this is the plan at Trump rallies and campaign platforms.

Remember how the communist countries missed a giant opportunity to move forward 1945-1990 because of their terrible gummints and came out of the soviet era impoverished for generations? Well the Rs are making the same error by sticking with Trumpism. Dump Trumpism and the Rs could be grabbing a lot of votes. But they won't dump Trump, even after he is convicted of felonies against America. Fools.

I'm actually astounded you said that. The vast majority of Democrats I know still support the woke soft on crime laws despite the carnage they're causing.

I'm still likely not going to go downtown much in my home city, but give it 3 years and if it's back to normal then I will.

oh I live in a big blue city and there is a lot of complaining in my
fairly wealthy middle-aged circles about some hard left policies . Do you live in a city? Where do you get your anecdotes?

Items people in my solidly Democratic circles complain about:

1/ lax policing/no cash bail

2/ identity politics in government and schools

3/tolerance of homeless on the streets/public transit

The revolt of the NYC suburban voters as they voted R in 2022 is a sign that there is a big opening for a center/center right party to push back against the too-left policies of urban Dems. But no one I know could ever vote R because of Trumpism. Just can't.

Polls even show African Americans who actually vote and are over say 50 actually want tougher policing. But it's very hard to advocate for in the cities because it labels you a right winger.

this kind of statement is so completely ridiculous. I mean unless you are talking absolute urban desolate core of Detroit, Watts, Compton, Trenton or something like that, where life hasn't been safe for generations, it's a completely absurd statement. So yeah it could be true, depending on what city you are talking about and how you define 'downtown,' but your fear of crime is most likely way way overheated. Most likely crime in your downtown is down a lot and basically a rounding error unless you are young, male and African American.

And I'm equally surprised that that has been your experience. Here in NYC (live in Greenwich Village, work in Harlem) I encounter a wide range of Democratic opinion and essentially everyone wants people who commit crimes to go to jail and stay there.

OTOH perhaps that attitude explains why NYC's crime rates are lower than, say, Ohio's.

I grew up just outside of a large city known for its progressive policies. It was one of the safest cities in the US until 2020, until crime spiked. Crime is out of control now (especially homeless, but also random violent crime), randomly occurring everywhere with far more normal victims of crime

The thing is, it's a no win situation to talk / not talk about crime.

If you don't talk about crime, Democrats will call you racist for not caring about the mainly black victims of crime. If you do talk about crime, you'll also be called racist for talking about black on black crime.

well there's always an outlier and maybe you live in an outlier situation somewhere. But what you are describing is not reality for the vast majority of urban/suburban Americans.

I mean even poor Portland, poster child of poor crime fighting and legalized drugs, has crime down 10-15% over the past year and now back to similar levels where crime was in 2015ish.

Then you should push back against every Soros supported DA nationwide who are responsible for the laxness on crime. I doubt your fellow libs will agree with you.

Meantime, Republicans want a criminal defendant with 91 counts to be their presidential candidates.

If we want to be "tougher on crimes" then we need to tougher on all crimes, including white collar crimes committed by rich people.

An outlier is a possibility. But a fairly unlikely one.

Possibilities:

1) USWM grew up just outside an outlier city.

I would say that both 2) and 3) are far more likely than 1).
