I was actually taking a poke at the guy who took 15 minutes of his life to defend Vipam, who, in a frenzied effort to stay on top of the news, has felt the need to alert Letsrun leaders about the astonishing death toll wrought by the tsunami, in some confusion unable to realize that anyone with Internet access (i.e., every poster on this board) has already heard about it.

In an interview Kenenisa said that he ran the 800m and Mile with no training at all and posted best of 2:10 and 4:25 around the age of 15/16 on a dirt track. The next year he trained and said he posted 8:47 for 2 miles at 8000 ft altitude. Then he was asked to take part in scheduled training with some of the top Ethiopians. So his decision to try the 1500m in 2005 may not be unfamiliar to him at all considering we didn't know about his previous experience or how much experience he have at that distance.

Vipam may be a little overenthusiastic about some East African runners, and he is not always right.

But he is a no-nosense poster, who researches a lot of track stories thoroughly, and posts them here for anyone interested. We could use a LOT more posters like him, and a LOT LESS like you.

Maybe this thread has run its course. But his predictions about Bekele were superb, and of course he deserves major props for them. One of the best predictions ever on LetsRun. (though he WAS wrong about "El G having no shot at beating Bekele in the 5k." wrong wrong wrong.

Like I said, no one is perfect.

But you and the few others that spend all your time hating on him are WAY MORE annoying than he could ever be.

i've had a long time looking at kennster's times & i do get some interesting estimates:

his current 5 & 10k WRs ->

~ 3'30.1 & 7'19.9

for 1.5 & 3k currently

however, he ran those 5 & 10k WRs at a canter

he's more likely to be a 12'35 / 26'15 runner flat out (currently)

which ->

~ 3'29.6 & 7'18.6

it's just an opinion, bt i'd suggest he may go mid-3'29' & mid-7'18 this year ( flat out)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Dec. 8) – World-record holder Kenenisa Bekele, the 2004 Olympic gold medalist at 10,000 meters, will compete at the 2005 Reebok Boston Indoor Games on Jan. 29, organizers announced today. It will be the first race ever in the United States for the phenomenal Ethiopian, who in 2004 rewrote the record books.

“If anyone will ever challenge Haile Gebrselassie to the title of greatest distance runner in history, it’s Kenenisa Bekele,” said Mark Wetmore, meet director and president of Global Athletics & Marketing, Inc., in making the announcement. “To get Bekele here, in his prime, just a year after Gebrselassie says a lot about the respect athletes have for both the event and the Boston fans.”

Bekele agrees. “I am very excited to be coming to Boston for my first competition in your country,” he said. “Haile told me what great fans you have.”

Just 22, Bekele’s 2004 season was among the best in history for any track athlete. Already the reigning World Champion at 10,000m, he began his assault on the record books by breaking Gebrselassie’s world indoor record for 5000m (12:49.60). In March, he earned his third consecutive double victory, at both 4 kilometers and 12 kilometers, at the World Cross Country Championships, making him the most-decorated cross-country runner in history. Within nine days last summer, he broke two more of Gebrselassie’s world marks, 5000 meters (12:37.35) and 10,000 meters (26:20.31) before taking gold in Athens at 10,000m and silver at 5000m. His 27:05.10 at 10,000m was an Olympic record.

For his efforts, Bekele has been named male Athlete of the Year by the IAAF, the world’s governing body of track-and-field.

I think the world record for 2 miles is 8:04.69 by Haile G from 2003. In the Boston Indoor promotions I read something about him going for the 3000m world record 7:24.90 by Daniel Komen not the 2 mile?

Also, no one is saying Bekele is not a phenomenal athlete. But that does not excuse fanasticism or blowing him up to mythic proportions.

I posted this alittle while ago and ANYONE who is interested in hearing those exact words can look at the 2003 World Championships during Kenenisa's 5000m heat or final (can't remember which but its stated very clearly). The rest you can get by a simple google search.

It was also announced that Tim Broe (USA), Alistair Cragg (Ireland), Daniel Lincoln (USA), Kevin Sullivan (Canada), Jonathon Riley (USA) and Dathan Ritzenhein (USA) will face Olympic gold medallist Kenenisa Bekele at 3000 metres. All are 2004 Olympians.

Also in the field is Ethiopia’s Markos Geneti, who staged one of the biggest upsets of the 2004 indoor season when he defeated Haile Gebrselassie to win the 2-Mile indoor race in Birmingham, England, last winter.
