Seriously guys, I am actually quite concerned with the reading comprehension level amongst the individuals competing in the Southern Conference. My post was meant to be uplifting, to congratulate the certain individuals on having a great season, and to attempt to convey the idea that the Southern Conference is improving and everyone here should be proud. Instead, one person thinks I’m an “ass” for bashing App. The bashing never occurred. In fact, I did the quite opposite in telling asking people to stop bashing App in the first and last paragraphs of my post.
Here is what I said:
“They [App] have a great program and they put together a solid run as team champions. With that said, I agree with the statement that people shouldn't celebrate App's loss on a public forum next week. Quite frankly, it's just not a big deal. Yeah yeah... they have been de-throned; but it wasn't done while they were on their A-game. If anything, I would like to see their team 100% healthy next week and put up a fight to hold onto their title. Now that would be news!”
And
“I didn't go to App but I was jumping up and down cheering for them during the 4th quarter when they beat Michigan.”
That’s exactly what was said. I asked people to stop bashing them and two seperate times I stated that I wanted to see them win. My best friend graduated from there, I was always friendly with the guys who ran for App, and I am still in contact with several of them. There are no hard feelings what so ever. There is no grudge for not beating App, because I have beaten App. I’ve beat several guys from App multiple times in track. I’ve also been on XC teams that have won the Old Mountain Jug and retained ownership of it.
And yeah, App’s team was brought up while drinking with an old teammate, but we didn’t meet up to drink to App. Actually, he was a track guy and didn’t even run XC. The point of that sentence was to add context and a specific timeline to the underlining point of the paragraph – that people shouldn’t be celebrating App’s loss, because due to injuries and other factors, it is not new and/or cool that they don’t look like they are going to win conference. I.e. I drank a beer with a teammate six weeks ago; because it came up in conversation then, it therefore it cannot be new news today. It’s a simple logical reasoning “if-then” statement. That’s day one stuff kids.
Furthermore, my level of intelligence was called into question because I said I thought it would be cool if UNCG made nationals. I never said that they would. I actually said that it was unlikely that they would, but I was criticized for saying something that I actually never said.
Here’s what was said about qualifying for nationals:
“If Chelimo wins the region it’s almost like UNCG only has to score four runners. It never quite worked for Liberty with McDougal and Chelenga, but it was a real possibility then and it is just as real now…. I don't believe that both teams will make it. I'm not overly confident that one will make it. But I do believe that one of them could sneak into the spotlight and steal a spot at the big dance.”
Listen, I get it. Most of the posts on here are negative. You might even say it is the point of the thread. And I knew that everyone wasn’t going to agree with what I wrote. I actually ended the post by predicting myself being criticized. But seriously gentleman, your intelligence and maturity has to be called into question with responses like this. If you disagree with the main point of the post and think that everyone should hate each other, then that’s fine. I suggest that you turn off the selective hearing (or reading in this case) and try actually using your brains to evaluate what others are saying. Because right now beating your head against the keyboard until your nose hits the send button isn’t working for you. Listen guys, I'm writing all this for your benefit. It's a tough job market out there and I am honestly worried about you guys. It really does help to stay positive. So if you guys ever need any advice or tips on sentence structure/reading comprehension, please don't be afraid to ask.
