Surprised to see Bowdoin not make it.

Agreed, though you might say that Grinell had an even better shot than Bowdoin. Still can't believe that they picked Mount Union, Manchester is slightly plausible, and Elizabethtown is a slight surprise considering they finished 85 points back from the 4th place team, Dickinson.
Politics at it's best.

I'm guessing Mt. Union is an economic pick, with nats in Ohio.
North Central College got a score of 21 points not 22 points to UW-LAX's 105 points. I know this because I was there and I am an assitance coach for Carroll University were we are happy to say we got one women to Nationals, Megan O'Grady in 5th place with a time of 21:37.7. Go O'Grady

I was surprised that they took Colorado College without Whitworth, only 2 points behind. I think that it would have made more sense to take Whit than Etown.
Also, I think it is sad but true that they make economic decisions. Bowdoin, Whitworth, and Grinnell drew the short straws this year, as I believe that they are better than some of the at-large teams that got in. That's how the system works though.

the rationalizations and conspiracy theories that go on here are freaking hilarious. i don't think it took "economic decisions" or "politics" (as a previous poster suggested) to leave bowdoin, whitworth, and grinnell at home. bowdoin was fifth in its own conference meet, losing to tufts and middlebury. they were 22nd at new englands, and the only team they beat in the last six weeks of the season was a southern maine team that ended up ninth in the region.
similar stories with whitworth and grinnell. there were forty teams eligible for the national meet, and grinnell didn't beat a single one all season. whitworth beat pomona-pitzer at the regional meet, and that's pretty much it. mt. union and manchester didn't exactly set the world on fire, but they both beat case western a couple of times, and case western was eligible for nationals. i'm guessing that's what it came down to. it's hard to get too worked up about the #32 spot-- none of these teams really beat anyone, despite ample opportunities to do so. but spare me the talk of politics and conspiracy-- this isn't like determining the american 4x100 team for the olympics. it's the last spot in the d3 cross-country meet, for cripe's sake. get some perspective.
What's really a shame is that decisions over teams like Mount Union, Manchester, etc. are being made, while UW-Stevens Point, Augustana and UW-Whitewater (6-8 Midwest) can't be put into the pool despite being ranked 5, 11, and 20.
regionals performance of the weekend? team? individual?
Best team performances of regionals weekend would have to be North Central and Wash U.
Maybe those teams should have performed at regionals just like those teams that did end up getting 3, 4, and 5 at the Midwest regional (1 and 2 were already sorted out with NCC and Lax).

I agree, NCC was expected but Wash U getting 3rd as an unranked was completely unprecedented. Frankly, I'm surprised so few people are talking about it.
Cortland rebounded nicely from their lose to Geneseo at SUNYACs and Dubois did not finish close to as high as he could have. Geneseo does not look as strong as they did two weeks ago. Williams also looks like they have a pretty scary looking pack out of new england. Anyone know if their guys went all-out or were they holding back to run together? Allegheny also looks very solid.

Everyone is bias toward their particular region. That said, I see 4 reason why Etown got over other teams:
1. They went to inter-regional rumble and beat teams outside their region.
2. The Mideast has 52 teams in the region. Therefore, the 85 point spread is not as big as it seems. It was a deeper field than other region that have 35-40 teams.
3. Last year, they also finished 5th, 100+ behind 4th place. They ended up ranked 34th and just missed entry. This year they cut that 85 pts. even as the top 4 teams continued to be even better.
4. As of last week, they were ranked 5th in their region and 31st in the national poll. They finished fifth as expected. By doing as expected they continue to justify their national ranking and an at-large bid.
Kudos for the Wash U men's team performance on Saturday...and their ardent throng of supporters who showed up to the regional meet wearing nothing but body paint and those very loud spandex shorts. Hopefully they show up again at Nationals.
Wash U certainly had the most enthusiasm at the meet..aren't they the furthest Midwest school from Oshkosh? It almost seemed as though they willed the men's team to that performance. It would be great to see them again next week...funny to think that such smart kids were so absurdly attired and giddy.
We at WashU are hard at work lobbying the NCAA to include cheering, dressing, and team showering in the scoring at future Regional and National meets.
WashU fans are going to get blown away by CWRU fans at Nationals.
