Please tell me how you are measuring that number. Because their instagram doesn't get a ton of engagement to begin with. Pretty Much all of their posts in the last 5 months that i bothered to go back cap out at 20-30 comments unless they involve Cooper Teare or Cole Hocker who bring in audiences of their own.

Idk what they teach at new gen university, but you can’t track mere impressions or interactions on an Instagram post, especially ones that have been deleted. It’s ok that you’re speaking in biased generalizations but it would be more productive if you just admitted that to yourself instead of trying to argue an unprovable point.

Only in the world of coddled runners could I see the words "torture porn" used to describe funny pictures willingly taken depicting a near universal stereotype of over-the-top bullying-- the kind that is prevalent in almost every movie/TV show involving high schoolers over the last 50 years.

I think an image that would be right at home on Disney channel or Nickelodeon-- an image like faking getting stuffed into a locker or getting a wedgie-- does not qualify as torture porn, no.

To take it further, I think that the kind of person who would equate the two, or more broadly exhibit a sneering writing style like that ("I know what's harmful", "explain it like I'm 5", "sit and think", etc.) is virtually guaranteed to be closer to the archetype of an actual harmful bully than the people they're commenting about.

If a person is emboldened to make comments like behind a computer, I can only imagine how terrible they must be to interact with in person. Like I implied, "2-3" students a year attempting suicide under one's guidance cannot be a coincidence. That's evidence of an evil person (and I don't use that word lightly), evidence of someone who makes the lives of the people around them measurably worse for the misfortune of having come into contact with them.

I hesitated to share this for a few days, because I really don’t want anyone on here flaming the teen who wrote it. But yeah, it doesn’t seem like encouraging teens to do or say things purely for shock value is an anomaly for the NG founders. In fact, that type of behavior seems to be one of the main reasons that this kid looks up to Matt. I’m sure he would say that he’s clearly joking and I’m just not young and avant-garde enough to understand his subversive humor, but it’s… not funny? It’s just a really weird thing for a 24 year old to be saying to a high schooler in Instagram DMs. There are 24 year old high school teachers who figure out how to encourage students to take risks in their visual arts or creative writing classes without making jokes about them sexualizing their adult friends. Sure, the NG guys are probably trying to be a lot more hip than high school creative writing teachers, but if they’re also trying to make a living partially by working with minors, they should probably figure out a way to institute some boundaries.

"In 2021, 30% of female high-school students said they had seriously considered suicide during the year leading up to the survey, while about 24% had made a suicide plan, 13% had attempted suicide, and 4% required medical care related to an attempt. Among boys, those percentages were about 14%, 12%, 7%, and 2%, respectively. And while the percentage of high-school boys who said they had contemplated suicide increased only modestly from 2019 to 2021, the rate increased significantly among girls: from 24% to 30%."

The average high school teacher has well over 100 students. If only 2-3 of Ornelas' students are attempting suicide every year, then by your logic perhaps he actually has a positive impact on his students' mental health and is in fact bringing their suicide attempt rate down far below the national average.

It’s not just this camp, it’s been so much stuff here and there over the years that have been icky. For me the potentially “dangerous” part of new gen is how it’s slowly and subtlety it’s became such a toxic boys club over the years.

For talking so much about creating “subversive” and “edgy” stuff to change the sport, most of the stuff they do is super low hanging fruit to have an issue with, like there’s an article that was in their magazine and on their website where they tear down female distance runners like Elle (who is one of the few actual blue collar background pro runners in the sport and has a super unique background), but they’re gonna publicly label her and other team usa female athletes as “super cringe” and “awful” over their music preferences cause how dare they like “basic” music like Taylor swift or eye of the tiger. And then in the same article they’ll praise a female runner who has “good taste” in music, and by good taste in music I mean music that just aligns with their taste

There’s such an issue with young white male creators thinking that their own option and taste is the standard, and anyone that deviates from it has no taste and that they should then be allowed to pick on young girls and women for liking the things that they like

theres also an annoying issue with mediocre white dudes that like the most common and stereotypical fringe stuff out there, that’s literally “artsy kid 101” kinda stuff and thinking they’re so deep for knowing references that “no one else knows” (when in reality most people know of it, but when your audience is high schoolers it’s so easy to know stuff that they don’t and appear so deep and sophisticated to high schoolers cause they’re so young)

it would be cool if they genuinely shared the things that they like with their younger audience, but so much of it is stuff that has such a toxic, warped, sexist, outdated message to it. And they constantly have an issue anytime someone pushes back, like with this camp critique, and will bully and talk about the person who dares to have an issue with what they like

it’s just training young high school girls who look up to new gen that they better be “cool” interesting girls, and be the kinda go-with-the-flo entertaining and performative to the male gaze kinda girl who doesn’t take offense to anything, and to be the kinda girl who knows how to “take a joke”, otherwise new gen is gonna think that they’re lame and not want to work with them in the future. And that’s just a problematic recipe for disaster

thats like the creepy male photography professors at colleges in the art world who try and tell their female students that to become a better photographer that they have to be willing to pose nude, take drugs, etc, cause they won’t get better until they push themselves past their comfort zone and let lose. I can’t believe a girl wrote this on a blog. It is sickening. He told her that? And she respected him more? What the hell?

When I was in middle school circa 2010ish, we had extensive lessons about how the internet is forever. Wanted multiple times about our footprint, colleges and jobs getting a hold of anything. Nothing will ever truly be wiped away. Scary Cyberbullying antidotes. Facebook was all the rage, blogs existed, but Instagram had come out in maybe 2010. So compared to now, it was nothing.

I bring that up because it seems like, in this social media crazy climate, it appears no one worried about this/ extending a lesson in internet safety these days
