want to know how absolutely terrible the Republicans are?
They want to find a cost offset to Israel aid. Which is fine - I agree. That's wise leadership so I initially clapped.
So where do they want to find the offset? You got it, the IRS. The IRS. Because that's what the billionaire owners of the GOP want. Not a place where the money is legit wasted - noooooo. They don't want to find cuts from some boondogle or wasteful agency. The Repubs want to strangle the tax agency so the richest of the rich can get away with murder.
It's really shocking how bad the GOP is. I mean truly. They always find a way to get worse and more obviously corrupt.

Of course, it's roughly twice as bad as this.
Pre-Trump, a hell of a lot of non-rich people would have said, "Yes, let's have an IRS capable of properly collecting taxes from rich people."
But Donny came along and said, "Most government bad - UNLESS on any given occasion I say it's GREAT. Mostly, just trust ME on everything, and not that evil Deep State."
And all of the morans - prototypes represented right here on LRC - said, "OK!! Yeah, the IRS is horrible! Trump said so! Get rid of the IRS!! (....and FBI, and CIA, and DOJ, and HHS, and CDC, and NIH, and FDA, and EPA, and....)"
Net: Rich people STILL against a properly functioning government, PLUS lots more mouth-breathers ALSO against a properly functioning government.
What's happening here is that the big donors have a disproportionately stronger influence now on the GQP than they did before when the orange clown was more relevant. They pounced on the new useful idiot playing speaker, so he has to dance at their request. Pretty sad.

it's also partly the right-wing version of 'virtue signaling.' Saying that the federal government should have low power to collect lawful taxes is a big seller in trumplandia. Signals that you think the feds are corrupt and really 'them' not 'us.'
Compare to the Dem version of virtue signaling - that we should be tolerant and friendly to people who are different than us.

They spent about $10 billion of the $60 billion expansion of the IRS since the inflation reduction act was enacted to go after the billionaire boogie men that supposedly aren’t paying their fair share. If they can find them, great, but if they are just spending money for no reason, then it is worth questioning the reasoning behind the expansion. Thus far they have $160 million to show for it. Wake me when we see a positive return on the investment. The best way to fund the war in the Middle East is with a tax on imported oil (the real reason we support Israel and why Iran hates Israel), Chinese imports (who is backing the other side) and cuts to our military. The sooner we can remove ourselves from the Middle East, the better.

ok so hike the cost of energy and then blame biden for the resulting inflation. Uh huh.
You are naive to think that funding the IRS is a waste. You are looking at the very early stages of this 10-year rampup. And you are terrified to disagree with your party.
How about we find some actual waste and end that? Good plan? Agreed?
In any case, the bill will fail. The first bill from this new speaker and it will go down in flames. But virtue will be signaled. Virtue will be signaled. Golf clap.

Agip, how are you able to post all day in this thread? Are you retired or unemployed?
People don’t really understand how bad GOP policies are. When you tell them, they don’t believe it.
“The IRS is building a free digital tax filing system so you won't have to pay for TurboTax etc. The GOP's offsets for the Israel war funds strips funding for it.”

The GOP used to hide or camouflage/spin their corrupt self dealing policies. They don’t do that anymore. They have Fox News do their whitewashing every evening. Cutting funding to the IRS sounds inconsequential to the average Joe. But it is an enormous multi billion gift to wealthy. And it is a direct hit to the money needed to fund the damn government. Stealing from the poor to pay the rich.
That red headed “goofy” Australian billionaire that Trump gave nuclear secrets to? Well he paid a million per ticket for a new years gala at Mar ALago that normally go for 50,000.
not a bad investment if Trump awards your biz with a billion dollars more revenue. Yes Billion with a B. the corrupt of Trump Inc was wide out in the open. There was a reason his DC hotel was booked with foreigners lining up to pay to play.
We have a banana republic court judge. SCOTUS will overrule her.
Is the judge in the 14th Amendment case in Colorado to keep Donald Trump off the ballot also a donor to Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold(D)? Why didn’t the judge recuse herself? Seems to raise major ethics questions about the judge in this case.#copoliticspic.twitter.com/awe8DfSR50

What is your obsession with agip?
I'm curious how someone on a forum about long distance running has the time and energy to post 10+ times a day for years (!) in a POLITICAL thread.
You are either unemployed (and we shouldn't respect your opinion) or you are retired with no life (this is worse, imagine spending your golden years talking about politics on a running forum).

The government sucks at doing anything better than the private sector. How many billions is this “free” filing system costing the average tax payer?

Yeah, that's why the only entity entitled to provide social services is the church, not the government, according to our new Speaker.
“I was in South America two weeks ago and they were talking about how … the Catholic Church used to provide soup kitchens and orphanages and do all this stuff and it doesn’t do it anymore and now they’re just willfully, everybody’s willfully, having the civil government take all these responsibilities over. And it’s just a sad development because that’s not how it’s supposed to work,”
He is also against Democracy.
“By the way, the United States is not a democracy. Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. You don’t want to be in a democracy. Majority rule: not always a good thing,”

Thanks for bringing light to the fact that churches do a better job at charity, marriage, orphanages and a host of other things that the state sucks at.
A Las Vegas man appeared in federal court Friday after he was accused of making "threatening communications" to a United States Senator from Nevada, according to The United States Department of Justice.
