It was an unofficial freakshow. From all we know he may not even have run the exact distance but it doesn't matter anyway.
Not a real race, not a real Marathon, a glorified training sessions and scientific experiment. But not sport in that.
We are glad it's over so we can focus back on what is important: the sport.

Just watched the replay. The broadcast was really good, Shalane was one of the announcers. But since this was almost expected it was a big anticlimactic.
This whole thing reminds me of Gatlin a few years ago with the ginormous fan blowing at his back as he ran 9.4 or something crazy?!?!
I remember 30 plus years ago Runners World asking Rodgers, Shorter and Co. what they thought the marathon world record would be in 2020 or there abouts ??? - Most guessed correctly but I don’t think they would have imagined this kind of organization to set it up to actually make it happen. This whole effort just goes to show that “No man is an island” in any endeavor in life as Donne but it centuries ago. Nearly all of the current elites there to make it happen as well added to ’dopers helping dopers’ mystic.

The event usually showcased is extremely boring to all of the general public bar a few super fans who post on sites like this (and a lot of them seem pretty toxic)
The event today must have had 30k people lining the streets and millions talking about it worldwide.
This event hasn't got it wrong, they have got it so so right. It's this sport which totally misjudges what the public are interested in.

anyway it is def incredible how much spunk KipGOATe had at the finish line. It was almost like every 100m/200m race where the winner just kinda keeps going as they hi-five fans, get their flag, etc. Either the shoes, conditions, pacer formation, etc. was truly that efficient, he's just the greatest of all time no question, or both. I feel like with that much energy left over he could have gone closer to 1:59 flat.
Any cyclist...? They are drafting behind a 10ft windshield! Any scientist or normal intuitive person would say, yes, there is likely a huge draft benefit in this case. Likely much bigger than inefficiently drafting behind a bicycle.
This whole event is a stunt that just dilutes the value of real marathon performances perceived by non-runners and the general media. This all comes just after Al Sal's project gets shutdown for being dirty to the core. This whole thing likely includes:
- A large drafting benefit
- Super spring loaded shoes
- The runner and pacers doped to the gills - EPO, Testosterone, Meldonium, Direct Carnitine Injections, Excessive Caffeine, Crack Cocaine.
Maybe it is clean, I don't know; I know is it is going to become more and more difficult for normal people to get excited about marathon breakthroughs that are legitimate.

I was captivated all the way through. The first one was probably more exciting because it was the first time.
The announcers talked too much, of course, but what are they supposed to do?

The only thing I can come up with is that they were trying to prevent huge swings in pace that would occur even if they were to run with a tailwind. Or maybe they were whispering in his ear the whole time.
It’s impressive but his 2:01:39 indicates that it could be done in a real competition and that’s when I’ll be excited
