Just to continue to keep awareness...HU canceled their upcoming gala and there is a new petition to remove President Sherilynn Emberton, VP Russ Digitz, and AD Lore Culler. It stand at nearly 500 signatures at this point.
Here’s the link the the petition. Sign it and share it to get as many signatures as possible. Let HU know it won’t go away until they take major action.
It is a little strange, isn’t it, for a coach to create / distribute / promote a petition aimed at taking down an institution that is a direct competitor of your school? I am sure you have nothing but the best and purest motives, though, just like everyone else entangled in this mire.
According to Huntington University the three coaches (Lauren Johnson, Assistant Coach Curtis Hines and Nicholas Johnson) in a civil lawsuit are now considered as ‘now formerly affiliated Univ…
The final line of the Huntington University statement about "forgiveness and reconciliation" concerns me. My read is:
Reconciliation = Victims will get a huge settlement and sign a non-disclosure/no fault agreement with Huntington U.
Forgiveness = After the settlement and the review finding that no criminal acts/Title IX violations were directly committed by L. Johnson or Hines, both will be back on the payroll as coaches within 12 months.

At this point I think it's clear that the only appropriate punishment is financial insolvency for Huntington University. They allude to making policy changes to protect student athletes, yet turn right around and hire Lauren Johnson when they should have known she needed to be removed as well. Even the current statement includes language that shows that they will try to minimize this. After this "external review" they will probably just make a few policy changes, and MAYBE fire one or two low level administrators. This institution is rotten to the core, and something like this will happen there again.
Hopefully this drama will cause just enough of a drop in enrollment to force Huntington to shut its doors. There's no way a private school with 1000 students, no real money makers in athletics, and next to no research activity won't at least feel the pinch of a 10% drop in enrollment.
Sounds like there is no real political will from the NAIA, conference commissioners, or NAIA school ADs to sanction Huntington in any meaningful way. Outside of the lawsuit (which is not trivial by any means but I could easily see being settled out of court), this matter is pretty much wrapped up.
I think that bringing in the independent review team that has extensive experience with these issues to investigate thoroughly what actually happened and then provide recommendations was a good move. I would think that this should satisfy every reasonable uninvolved person so long as Huntington follows the guidance provided. I look forward to hearing their findings.
You guys are wanting an entire university to go away because of the crazy XC coach? What world do you live in?
Fire the coaches and AD that may be involved, pay the fines, pay the civil lawsuits, move on.
I certainly don't think the university should "go away." I do think a thorough investigation needs to be completed. Not merely lip service. An agency such as the FBI has the wherewithal to get it done. A quiet settlement a a few terminations don't necessarily fix the underlying issues.

I don't think the entire university should "go away," but it's also not just one "crazy XC coach." A lot of people at that school let this happen and I hope there are consequences for those people. Will there be? Who knows.

Not entirely true. Do you remember how poorly the Indy FBI office handled the USA Gymnastics. They still have lawsuits against their office because of sweeping things under or not looking into reports.

What exactly is Huntington University contributing to the world? It sounds like there are plenty of other little Christian NAIA schools just up the road from Huntington. I doubt the school will be closed but it won't be missed by many if it happens.
The rot appears to have reached very high and very deep into the university hierarchy. The AD, the president, and a board member that hired Nick Johnson for his landscaping concern after his conviction must be removed at a minimum. Very simply, anyone that aided, abetted, participated in or had knowledge of a cover-up must never again be employed or associated with Huntington University. There would seem to be a culture of nepotism, hero worship, and protection at the institution that allowed this to happen.
If the university cleans its house and ensures that a similar situation will never happen again. then it is up to the market to decide if it should survive.

Well, it obviously would not affect us. I didn't even know the school existed until a couple of weeks ago. However, it might affect the town, the students, the professors, staff, alumni, etc. And, I bet some would think they are contributing to the world. Your statement, to me, sounds like a wealthy person that says, "Pftt... who cares about inflation... it doesn't affect me!" All the while the homeless population and the number of struggling people in all kinds of ways are going up and up. But, who cares, right?! Screw 'em.

Do you have more information than everyone else? Just a short time ago, it looked like we were overall happy that it looked like a proper investigation would be done. So, how do you know who all covered what things up?

Get bent.
IF the institution is intentionally covering up abuse, I would think the town, students, professors and even grade-A blowhards like yourself would want to see a heavy-handed punishment so other institutions see that covering up abuse is wrong.
