Russia did nothing? Except participate in the Transnistria War (1990–1992), the First Chechen War (1994–1996), the Second Chechen War (1999–2000), the Georgian war (2008), and the Ukrainian war (2014–present). So, at least 5 armed conflicts aimed at expanding or retaining Russian territory in the last 30 years. That's a LOT of doing nothing.
I was referring to their actions regarding the eastward expansion of NATO prior to 2008. NATO said it wouldn't move east and then gobbled up all of eastern Europe along with Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania before Russia did anything.

I thought that Zelensky would fold early and give up Donbas and Crimea in exchange for security guarantees and demilitarization of the disputed regions. But since the war broke out, the nationalist elements in Ukraine are the ones doing the fighting and in many cases winning against an inept and corrupt Russian armed forces. The nationalists have consolidated power in Ukraine and Zelensky recently moved against the pro-Russian minority parties by banning them. The nationalist will not let Zelensky make major concessions on land. They would rather fight to the death and do not care if Putin lays waste to most of Ukraine in the process. I also think Putin is all in and will not accept anything less than the end of Zelensky's government and a complete annexation of all of Ukraine (what every is left of it). Ukraine is not Syria or Chechnya. Russia will not be able to bomb everything and claim a victory. Ukraine is too big a country and Russia may actually run out of bombs (speculation is that the hypersonic missile were deployed because Russia is running out of conventional missiles and bombs.
