Tom “Tinman” Schwartz and Drew Hunter/Tinman Elite have parted ways

As discussed earlier, other people coaches are getting payed enough by their athletes/sponsors that they don’t NEED TO! 24k a year is PATHETIC for a man to make. Only a group of immature boys living in Drew’s basement would think that is enough for a man to raise a family with. 2k a month, please come watch our 2-3 hour practices everyday, 2k a month, please move your family over to watch us.

We are reminded how immature the TME are.

That's what happens when you go pro out of high school. Why was a 19 year old making this decisions? He should've just gone to college...

I'm afraid Tammy neglected to mention how much Drew paid Tom each year. Tom was paid much more than $24K a year. More than double that. For a very part time gig.

okay, if we are missing that much of the story then tell us.

To a lot of commentators runners are children or greyhounds suited for enlightened exploitation and when shown otherwise can't deal with it.

If a young runner left home for $2,000 a month and was let go from the team these same posters would be saying that the runner was naive and deserved it. When an old man with decades in the business does the same he's been tricked and it's his employers' fault. If that runner also had side jobs and worked on a PhD these same people would be pointing to the lack of commitment and focus.

How about a supposedly world class coach that can't get world class athletes to hire him? Thanks to his wife's outrageous post here he can also kiss any big college job goodbye too. How did such woman let her husband make such a bad deal in the first place. She didn't and it wasn't.

I'm not sure why you think I'm calling Tinman the naive victim in all this. I'm not. He was an idiot. But Drew was also an idiot for not getting a proper coach! Why would Adidas let him hire a part time online coach and only pay him $2000 a month to coach a group of pro runners? Negligence.

They are BOTH imbeciles.

Many of his youth and Masters runners are more accomplished/impressive, relatively speaking, than his former TME runners. Why should he give them up. For a collection of stingy and ungrateful sub-elite running enthusiasts? People usually give up jobs for jobs that offer substantial raises. Were they offering him $150,000/year to quit his other job?

Speaking of degrees, did Drew ever get a college degree? If not, he may have trouble finding a job as an assistant for $2K/month when this running club peters out. So that puts his cut-throat approach to the business in a different light I guess.

Haha. On the one hand, this describes a lot of great coaches in my experience. On the other, I'm surprised that this wasn't apparent to Drew or Joan during the first decade of working with him.

These are valid reasons for firing a coach. We'll see soon enough if Cory and the Hunters have better luck controlling injuries on the team.

I know someone who pays for coaching from Tom, and it is not at all impersonal. Quite the contrary. He texts him most days to see how he's doing.

You talk about $200/month like it's a king's ransom. There are people on this thread who charge $200/hour for routine services. Not everyone works at the local running store.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but 2k a month of TME contributions from the organization (likely stemming from merch sales) would be $24,000 + Drew's contributions of a "small teacher salary".. let's say $40,000 would be $64,000/year? Not bad for part time coaching.

These kids need to read Bowerman and the Men of Oregon if they want to hear about a grumpy coach. Lol.

This misses my point. WHY was he part time coaching? Why was he not paid enough to be their full time coach? Professional coaches are very rarely "part time". It's a weird set-up. Why was this not arranged properly from the outset?

No imbeciles here. Just amateur hour and trying to do the right thing while letting years pass by. No one really lost anything until the firing was leaked months before the Olympics. Tinman could continue with his main businesses and look for a job if inclined. TME would have had time to rebrand and announce it after the Olympics or probably shut down - Adidas should buy out the rest of the Hunter contract.

That actually directly addressed your point. You asked where this info came from, it came directly from Tammy. Are we forgetting Tinman’s club team, high school performance team, his PhD, helping his wife’s middle school team, etc? In addition to his other individual clients who’ve been in this thread? Perhaps he was the one who wanted to be part time. Surely he wasn’t in need of more money with all those streams? Based on the team statement, it seems like they wanted more than he had bandwidth to provide.

Also, isn’t letsrun in agreement that this is a team of sub-elite wannabes? Surely we’re not expecting they can provide Schumacher money after four years of cobbling together t shirt sales. Someone get Kevin Hanson on here and ask him how much he makes. Can’t imagine it’s much more than what Tinman was getting for his side hustle.

He put in part time hours. 10-15 a week max, due to being too focused on the other athletes. Would've been paid more if he had dropped them.

Maybe Coach Schwartz was a beard as people have been saying for years.

Yes, he probably should of asked for more $ and a long term contract. We will certainly not let this happen again. If he was paid a higher salary he certainly would have cut down on the number of athletes he coaches. We could not afford to do such a thing.

Did you attend their practice sessions to attest to his grumpy, bossy, and arrogance? Pretty bold statement to make when you are not on the team, nor attend their practices.

A high rate of injuries? A coach can’t control the little things a semi or professional athlete must do to take care of their body for injury prevention. Such as massages, strength training, proper nutrition, and running at prescribed paces on easy days. The list is endless. Are other professional runners never injured? Many of these TME athletes also had a high incidence of injuries prior to joining the team. Their injury rate was substantially lessened under my husbands training. Do you have inside information as to what caused the so called injuries?

Yes he was working on his PhD but he still met with his guys on key workouts and some LSD days.

If the TME guys needed more attention from their Coach as you are saying. Why didn’t they address this issue with him. Also my husband went to Arizona for a training camp and half the guys were a no show. They changed their flights after the fact that all the Coaches involved would be there at certain dates and times to supervise training sessions.

I don’t Coach Middle School XC. My husband was the Head Middle School Coach and this never interfered with the TME training times.

As for the Project Gold Camp attendance. This camp did not conflict with trials or the Olympics. If it did Tom certainly would not attend the Camp.

Coach Tinman had his priorities straight. Do you really thing that we would move from Idaho to Colorado and not make a commitment to this team as a priority? We as a family moved for Drew and the TME asked Tom to be their Head Coach .

No, it completely missed my point. I don't care about the actual dollar figure that he was paid. If they wanted him to be a full time coach, why wasn't he given an incentive to be a full time coach? And why wasn't that made clear from the beginning? Why was Drew giving him more money than the other guys? Was he coaching Drew MORE (whatever that means)? I'm just trying to understand this setup, because it makes absolutely no sense to me.
