Andy, I know you are standing up for your friend. And letsrun is a lot of
noise. But the person who put the above info together actually did some
important legwork. Without 'hating'. I commend you for leaving that
conversation alone and standing up for Rob, but it is discrepancies such as
this which are puzzling.
When I look at photos of Rob since Laz joined, I see a guy who is really
working hard. Thumbs up. At the same time, I wonder why he did not look
quite like this in photos posted during the earlier parts all the way to
Missouri. I'm not making an accusation, and I'm not a hater. I'm making an
honest observation.
Last thing. I've been around US running message boards for 16 years now.
Dynamics and sociology are interesting. letsrun ESPECIALLY so. Andy,
you've announced (maybe twice?) in the letsrun conversation that you are
leaving and dramatically told them why. This is your right, but or better
or worse, this is known as "flouncing". When you return, as you have, it
just marks you for more of that special "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids"
banter that they are so well known for. I'm not saying you should/shouldn't
post there... that is your decision... but if you decide to leave, my
advice is to do it quietly. Flouncing does not serve the purpose you think
it does beyond the possible catharsis of writing tell-off words.

Haha! I'm a flouncer! You are probably right and I am back for another flounce, though just for a quick scan while my wife is not around! I take your point but I hope you can also see how frustrating it is to try and have an adult discussion amongst all this noise. And at the same time having to continually deal with people adopting my handle or sneaky variations of it and posting things up to make me look even more stupid than I am. Maybe I shouldn't have said why I was leaving (and look you're right I'm back again) but I thought it was worth saying. I don't think the setup here allows for sensible conversation easily, although there is plenty of it going on in here as well as all the vitriolic nonsense. The lack of anonymity at ultralist seems to reduce that, not completely, but it soon gets picked up from what I can see. But I am giving my impressions from a week or two on American forums so you probably do know much more from your 16 years. Just thought it was worth giving my first impressions - feel free to ignore them as coming from a newbie. Someone mentioned Jurek a few pages back, and hopefully his feat last year can be appreciated a little more now. Something like 50 miles a day for 46+ days, over some really tough trails.
I would think he has what it takes to actually make a legitmate shot at the transcontinental record.
Also, LOL at the people thinking walking at 4 mph for hours on end, days on end would be easy.

RY has quietly advanced nearly 60 miles since resuming last night. Problem is that he is in the heart of Indy right now. Can he push on for a big day to get clear of downtown before rush hour or perhaps he can get a sweet deal at the Marriott or Conrad for a rest break.

Several years ago, I met a runner whom we'll call Jason, following a 10K that a ran, in which he also participated (finishing behind me). He was friendly enough and talked about his training and his aspirations in the marathon. At the time I had similar aspirations and so we went for a few runs together.

I eventually stopped running with him, but he would occasionally turn up at group runs with the local sub-elite outfit. By now, his character took on a new angle, as his bluster turned to outright exagerration and falsehood. He claimed Powerbar was sponsoring him, when in fact he was just getting free samples that Powerbar gives to anyone who claims to be a coach or trainer. He claimed outrageous times that he couldn't back up, such as having broken 15 minutes for 5K on a track.
At area races, he consistently underperformed, running 19 minute 5Ks, and always he had an excuse...he took a wrong turn, he tripped. His favorite excuse was that he was using the race as a training/tempo run. Over the course of a summer he managed to alienate the entire running community by claiming his superiority in racing. Several challenged him to races, offering to comp his entry fee. He never accepted, but continued to claim he was the best, without any proof.
Eventually he lost every shred of credibility he had. He was a decent runner, but could find no one to run with because everyone was so thoroughly tired of him.
I think RY is the same type of personality. He's a narcissist in search of a source to validate that narcissism. He has made increasingly outrageous claims that don't seem to be backed up by anything, and now finally the wall he has built up around himself is starting to come down as more people call him on it and challenge him to prove his mettle.
I feel very sorry for him.
That's one interpretation and possibly you're right. However, as I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, I think the guy is suffering mentally with a few things and who could blame him if his childhood stories are true.
I think Rob is someone who may actually be a lot like Forrest Gump and I don't just mean with all of this 'running'. Some of the things I've heard like running in a kilt because the kids want it and for sausage rolls indicates that he is someone with perhaps a childlike mentality. That picture of him in Laz's shirt really makes me question his mental state. Maybe he truly believes he is running across the US and is simply not capable of working out that he isn't really as he's being convinced of this by his friends.
Maybe it is more sinister and he's a slick conman but something just doesn't feel right here. Whatever, I truly hope he makes it safely and can move on in a positive manner after this. Unfortunately, the scrutiny will not go away until he accepts / understands that he's made mistakes and not actually run the whole way.
