Is he even DOING the Japan/UK cross-over, tho? He talks a lot about how he is in Japan, but has he joined any of the myriad of run clubs in Tokyo? Has he hooked up with a coach/coaches to either set up his training, or run compare-and-contrast on coaching philosophy? Has he managed to touch on running as a culture and a social scene? Because my, admittedly cursory, glance at his stuff is uncoached influencer stuff, the only difference is the backdrop.
He's talented for sure, and chasing a pro contract, but I can't help but think of the commentary sports physiologists make about a lot of the ~genetic freaks~ at the top of various sports - they're there despite the stupid stuff they do, not because of it.
Definitely cursory. Have you watched his videos? He trained with a bunch of sub 2:20 guys from Tempo running japan. He spent a month in Nagano (at altitude) at a running camp with 40 local female pros.
Also you say this like it should be easy for some ginger gaijin to just up and join a local club in Japan, a place notorious for not opening up to foreigners.
If you disagree with his volume method just say that, but he's outlined his reasoning and methodology really well in pretty much all of his videos. (Also he handles the criticism really well) just seems like a great guy to me. Of all the youtubers to hate, you pick RTJ?
He was affiliated with one of the top Tokyo amateur teams but has now needs to step up his training and wants to move out of Tokyo. I think the interactions with the Japanese and his amateur teams are some of his best content.
IN SJD news, he's back and trolling his subscribers telling loyal viewers: "If you want to have an actual conversation, feel free to email me. Sounds like you won't." Bravo Seth, we missed your snarky responses.
He seems to do things smartly. The vast majority of his running is super slow for him.
It is nuts how fast most YouTubers do their slow running. Ben Parks runs everything at his recent marathon pace or faster and Bester hardly ever does anything above 7-min miles!
Ben Parkes in notorious for having his activity time 5/10 or even 15 mins more than his moving time. He never answers questions when asked about it. He can't be filming for that long on every run
Yes, it's really odd. Elapsed time aside, he's also propagating the beginner error of running too fast. Considering his audience are noobs, they probably misguidedly also run too fast. A further thing that niggles is his views on shoes. While his reviews are ok. He insinuates you need a complex shoe rotation, with different shoes for long runs, easy days, daily running, tempos and race days. Lots of influencers do this! The fact of the matter is you can do most of your training in one pair of shoes and achieve the exact same stimulus.

Why does that matter in anyway? He isnt trying to claim these runs as PBs or races.. do you want him to details every time he stops in the strava description?

Not backing him up, but how can you say he "can't be filming for that long" when you're stating 5/10 minutes? Filming is a lot of faffing. It could easily take that long, especially if his gf isn't filming.

What is he filming? All he does is rehash old videos with "best shoe for new runners" etc nowadays
Despite posting regularly since London, she recently uploaded a short video explaining why she hasn't been posting. She mentioned how difficult it has been to attend events and pretend to enjoy being there (something most of us experience daily). She even filmed herself crying in the back of a car (quick, Danie I'm about to cry, start rolling!).
She then went on to make a video about Daniel running a race, referring to it as "training her Tinder date to run." In the very next moment, despite struggling with everything, she films herself picking out an engagement ring.
It all feels so manic and chaotic; it seems like she and Daniel are deciding day by day which part of their ongoing life story they want to make up and share. Further to this they always break the fundamental story telling rule of show don't tell - literally telling us how we should interpret things!

My understanding is she lost someone close soon after London. It can do weird things to people, especially when you have a job like that.
Combine it with London being a bit of a disaster for her, and it's fairly understandable she might not be at her most level-headed. Well, Philly level-headed, anyway.
Poor Phily - sometimes she should be more sincere in taking a break from social media! It would probably do her a world of good. Her and Daniel could enjoy special moments; rather than thinking about what contrived story should we tell.
Big fan of Sean Tobin's videos. Very nicely filmed and they have an artful bleakness about them I find comforting. Makes a nice change from the fake enthusiasm, constant jump cuts, and endless promotion of overpriced tat that most offer up.

I totally understand your viewpoint and where your coming from as, especially if your neurotypical, things might look odd/not 100% genuine.
As someone who is neurodivergent like Philly, this unfortunately is a stertypical manifestation.
I'm not trying to be using neurodivence as an excuse. If you don't like the content/it annoys you than as normal scroll on by. Watch something that engages/entertains you. I'm just trying to offer a reason of why it's "confusing" as I'm guessing it mirrors her thought process/moods due to her ADHD.
ADHD is also a odd one with motivation for things. Some have thr super power of hyperfocus (which is why there's a few good ADHD runners) but also pitfall of lack of motivation for anything, and I mean anything at all. You're brain oscillates between the two extremes at random and from one to the other abruptly.
All being said, even though I like Philly as a person and athlete I struggle to say engaged with her YT, so only watch the infrequent video.

Perhaps it is a good lens into the ADHD mind. To be honest, it seems to work well for her - she has a rabid following of seemingly equally neurodiverse "totes emosh" fans.
I do wonder how much is a manifestation of ADHD as opposed to acting wacky and shoehorning dull events into a story - probably the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
I occasionally dip in for the occasional WTF moment.

It is, Philly does demonstrate stereotypical ADHD symptoms. I've got no doubt her diagnosis is correct!
I'd say it's same for every YouTuber in terms of how genuine they are. You choose what to share and subconsciously you know you're being filmed/watched, so your behaviour might change. Your point valid as some come across more genuine than others, especially if they share about when they got things wrong, because of stuff they could control, and not just all humble brags/outright brags all the time.
On being genuine and raw Stephen Scullion & Lionel Sanders (yes a triathlete but it's got running in) are best in terms of that content. Scullion at times is so brutally honest, I find it a little depressing!

Not at all in any way.
Far too focused to be properly ADHD.
You hugely undermine people with real ADHD saying that
Continuing the new feature on this sub which I will sporadically post over the next few weeks/months. Lots of big match ups of 32 ‘influencers’.
*****Earlier matches on previous pages. Will collate the first round results when all matches played to see who has made the next round (so still time to vote) ******
Culminating in the crowning of our favourite YouTuber. We like to mock and laugh at many on here but who do we actually like? Who escapes our ire and gets to be crowned champion.
Vote either up or down depending on your choice.
Round 1 - match 12/16.
Feel free to comment as to why you came to this judgement.

I like Scullion, but like you, I find the content a bit dry and depressing. He looks like he's on the verge of tears most of the time.
Also, I don't find he's the best at stringing things out to make the longer content he does. He seems to go round in circles where he could just get to the point. I can only assume it's for ad revenue, but it's pretty exhausting for what could be otherwise decent content.
