Question I have is, why didn't the Republicans get the wall funded while they had control of the House, Senate and WH? They had two years to do so and as soon as they lose one piece all of the sudden it's the issue.
To be fair, they didn't have the 60 senate votes required to pass a budget for that.
The Senate had (and has) the "nuclear option" available and could make it a straight up-or-down majority vote.
If they agreed on the "emergency" status, I'd imagine they would already have employed that option. But they haven't.
Still, the shutdown is not on the GOP *or* Dems in the Senate and/or House: They agreed on a bill in December and sent for the President to sign, as he had indicated he would. Then he reneged.
The shutdown remains entirely the President's responsibility.

King is an idiot, but he has a point.
We are trying to perpetuate ideas and culture from Europe, not Laos or Nigeria. We, as a nation, have decided that Western ideas guide us and are the best choice.
I'm not sure what to call that other than some sort of euro-centrism. It's what we are. If you don't believe Western Civ is the right guide for culture, I'm not sure what you are doing here. That's not love it or leave it...there is plenty to improve here. But at the core you have to believe that culture rooted in Europe is superior. Otherwise....
No wall in Republican controlled Texas. … Texas don't want any of the "enema domain" Trump is hawking as a savior or America.
Trump’s border wall would need private property, but Texas landowners plan to dig in for lengthy legal fight
Interesting that McConnell did not use the nuclear option on the budget like he did with the Supreme Court.
I guess he felt those two judges will be there until he dies but Democrats can have budget control fairly soon and he'd have to live to see that.

Trump doesn't want the wall - he wants the fight for the wall.
and dems haven't figured out how to counter him on it yet.

If by "Western Civilization" you mean things like representative government, equality under law or freedom of speech, then I would agree. But I suspect that's not what King means.
I am "less American" to him because I am not a Christian and my name does not sound Anglo. (I also have darker skin than "white" American's.)

Trump is countering himself. He has already started the land seizing process in Texas.
Dozens of Texans have received official letters that lawyers say is the first step to the government seizing their land — a practice that President Trump last week called “a fair process” and “very necessary.”

Are these located in metropolitan areas where they are getting dropped off and they only have to haul their loads a mile?

I believe the point was that the vast majority of "that stuff" arrives to the US by other means: boats, planes and trains originating from somewhere not related to the border with the scary Brown people.
Trump can claim the people who he is not paying are being paid because they are getting pay slips ... pay slips for $0.00.

Agreed, he just wants a distraction from the fact Mueller is about to release his report.

If you have the right saw or blade you can get through pretty much anything. You could have a 12in or so thick concrete Wall but then folks could simply throw a rope ladder over it or blast it. I’m pretty sure “border crossing” is big business down south, either financially or politically.

Would the House take an impeachment vote before the government reopens?
And if not, would that be enough of a reason for Trump to not sign off on any deal?
this and then some:
>they are testing the limits of executive power and the wall is a resonating subject on which to do that
>it's not 3-d chess, it's a test of will and the laws of the land and the stakes are high
>if trump folds he loses his base, and if that happens he'll lose enough support in congress that impeachment in the house (if the crimes and misdemeanors are high enough to meet impeachment standards) and conviction in the senate
>if the dems fold it's a big win for trump and he'll use shut downs again and again to get his way on any matter at any time
>it also gives precedence for maybe excising entire agencies and programs in the government. don't like regulation or program, refuse to sign any bill that funds the agency and shut the entire government until the dems cave again.
>if he declares national emergency, then what's to stop him from doing it again and again whenever he doesn't like something. including freedoms and elections, freezing assets of non-supporters, martial law, and we might as well be in russia. hail trump! that'll make a lot of you so happy.
so indeed hold on, we are in for some major political fireworks over the next weeks an months. this is just the beginning.
He’s going to try to declare a state of emergency and get the wall built that way. Then he will sign whatever Congress comes up with for opening the government. He will be challenged in court immediately and that’s where it will stay through 2020. This way it’s not a loss for the wall as he’s still fighting for it.

Yes. this is the truth. Those who believe otherwise have never tried to haul 50lbs of stuff through rivers and tunnels.
National emergency? Trump’s freaking out. Take a Valium, Don, when you feel squirrelly.
Trump is now "exploring" stealing disaster relief money from Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and California, to pay for his Wall of Ego.
