You miss the part where I said "but worse"? Metallica was the US continuation of hard rock/metal that started in the 70s. Led Zeppelin was the progenitor of the movement.

Led Zep was a blues band. Metallica is metal. Both hard rock.

yeah, that describes me as well, but i have a lot of respect for listening to Zappa even today.

Metallica was/is commercial side of headbanger heavy metal for sure.

I don't really like that stuff much but come close to it.

Led Zep, what can i say? Grew up on that stuff. Maybe not my favorite but it's pretty good and I am the first to admit their importance, their musicianship, their songwriting, their run, all really impressive.

From that period, i like the Who, Ramones, Stooges, Lou Reed among others.

If he meant Metallica is a more mainstream heavy metal band, then I agree.

the stones have been my go-to band for 40 years - their reinvention/blend of american music from multiple genres has always made the most sense to me. Keith is my favorite musician/songwriter by a lot.

Though I wasn’t really into Zappa, I appreciate a couple things about his music.

One was lyrics like, “Watch out where the huskies go and don’t you eat that yellow snow.” Oh, and the whole “Titties and Beer” song. For the record, I’m still a bit immature according to my wife.

The second was the musicians he mentored. Someone like Lowell George who was a member of the Mothers for awhile. That guy combined funk with some great slide guitar with Little Feat. Love(d) that band.

Stones- you are on to something there. What band from that era has aged as well, adapted, grown, improved, and remained intact? They win, though the Who have held up pretty well, too,

Keith is such a great guitarist.

The Stones have a really nice balance between reaping the benefits of heavy production, done meticulously, and maintaining a loose rocking groove sound (read, Keith RIchards guitar prowess and not being a slave to being on the beat).

David Bowie is an example of good music but just over produced for the most part.

Exile on Main Street is my happy place- the looseness, the grit, the roadhouse feel.

The obscurities like Torn and Frayed or Sweet Virginia, because they haven't been killed by radio saturation...they go straight to my heart every time.

It is interesting how you associate music with your past experiences. For me it is stronger relative to my younger years. Really don’t go there musically, for no particular reason. I do enjoy listening to current pop/country like Morgan Wallen, Florida Georgia Line, and Osbourne Brothers.

Stairway to Heaven last dance, LMFAO! I think you and I are exactly the same age. The ridiculous part was when it went uptempo at the end, nobody knew what to do?.

Worse yet was my junior high last song, “Sometimes When We Touch” by Dan Hill. I would always make some maidlin overture to the best-looking pair of jeans (that week). Once I found out that a girl had been lying to everyone and telling them that we had been having sex. I was scared out of my boots, but curiously went along with it because I thought she had a screw loose. How’s that for junior high logic?

Better yet was when a romanticCzech girl wanted to to dance the next song with me, and it ended up being Lionel Ritchie’s “Stuck on You”?. Ruined the whole thing, my friends and I kept laughing while she was trying to get serious.

I never got Zappa either. Stones, yes. Hey agip how about Ronnie Wood’s earlier band Faces, with Rod Stewart. Some really good material there that sounds to me like it was used later by many, including maybe Zep.

Exhale may also be my favorite. Right up there with Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed. The Mick Taylor era was by far my favorite.

I saw them in the late 1990s. They had moved from stadiums to indoor arenas for the winter, so I had a chance to see them up close. They were “old” at the time and the show was on a work night for me (up at 5 AM). I convinced my wife to go arguing that it may not be a great show, but we’d be seeing a historically great band. We could say we saw the Stones.

As you can imagine, the show was great. And the most energetic members of the band were the Glimmer Twins. Keith was especially gregarious by often playing directly to those of us seated behind the stage. Love that band.

Zep was notorious for ripping off material, but mostly from old school blues and rock artists, not the Faces as far as I know. Zep faced many a lawsuit. Some were successful.

Sticky Fingers was my Stones pinnacle.

Not sure where that falls in their chronology, but remember playing that album back then.

From that period, I listened to the Allman Brothers live at Fillmore until i just about wore it out, and the Doors 'Absolutely Live', and a great guitarist Leo Kottke. And of course Jimi H. Experience.

Discovered Iggy and the Stooges a bit later but listen to them a lot now.

Back then, all anybody cared about was that Zep were supposed to be all 6 foot plus buggers and screwing everything that moved, Everyone fantasized about being a rock star, and in their dreams, that were that kind of rock star.

I’ve never been able to stand the Stones. I can tolerate Zep but never loved them. The Beatles? Meh...

No accounting for taste... ?
