So, at a press conference yesterday Trump was directly asked why the government is shutdown over funding the wall since he promised during the campaign Mexico would pay for it.
His response was the re-negotiated NAFTA (which of course includes Mexico) deal would generate billions and billions of dollars—thus, he said, Mexico is paying for the wall.
That’s great and all but if that is true then why is the government shutdown? Since, per Trump, he is so awesome and renegotiated a new NAFTA that is brining in billions why is the government shutdown over a measly 5 billion for border security? Why aren’t we using all that money Trump successfully got us from Mexico and Canada to pay for the wall?

It’s pretty simple. He’s lying to save face. The money he talks about via the NAFTA thing is highly disputed by economic and trade experts and—even if you buy more conservative economists about that issue—it is theoretical money not actual money. It’s very similar to other conservative lies about economic policies such as “tax cuts pay for themselves” or “we’ll get to spending cuts after we pass these tax cuts”.
If there really are going to be billions coming in from new NAFTA then great! Let’s use that money to pay for the wall now. Shout down is over, no need for border funding, right?

His claim is bogus of course, but even IF we could swallow his stupid comment that Mexico is paying for the wall in that way, the money still has to be appropriated, so it still needs to be part of a bill.

Here is how I understand Trump's comments:
Mexico WILL pay for the wall covfefely. They are bigly paying for the wall right now. Indeed, the only reason that he is politely asking for an appropriation in the US budget is because he cares deeply about saving the reputations of all those Democrats in congress who are known as takers but with funding even a very TINY portion of the wall (and really, he promises you that there is no problem in that department) the Democrats would have a chance to be REAL Americans. He also is thinking about the well being of all those furloughed federal workers who are now being given (God given, really) the opportunity of a lifetime to show their patriotism to this country that used to suck but which is now being made great again. Also, the landlords of those federal workers are being God given such a yuuuge opportunity. As they say in Two Corinthians, well, he forgets what they say there but it must be good.
And anyone who says otherwise is FAKE NEWS!
I want to meet a federal worker who is very proud to be missing a paycheck because Trump is supposedly taking a stand for border security.
It doesn’t get real until Jan 11th when the first paychecks are missed, my guess is this goes until just before the 25th.
