Every hour, roll a die. Do the following if you roll a:

1) Run 10 miles at 6:00 pace.

2) Walk 1.5 miles at 40:00 pace.

3) Nap, or read Let's Run.

4) Sightsee.

5) Randomly grab your TomTom/tracker/old-timey-log-book (doesn't matter which one), fiddle with it (turn it on/off randomly, place it in your pocket or on the dash, write in it, marvel at all your cool gadgets, it doesn't matter which one), but for the love of Pete, DON'T share any of it publicly unless it's been vetted, processed and edited for public consumption by Dustin "The Gadget Guy" Brooks.

6) Sit on the side of the road in an exhausted stupor, while writing "Chapter Eight: Pennsylvania - So Hilly - The Dark Days" of your autobiography in your head.

Regarding current countdown, I imagine someone is keeping a more accurate tally but my back of envelope calculation shows that where he was at 11:30am EST (near Indy Airport) it looks like:

771 miles to Times Square (using Google maps with "avoiding highways" option to eliminate interstates and choosing shortest option)

About 12 Days 20 Hours to beat record

This comes out to 60.06 miles per 24-hour period for the next 308 hours.

I am fairly certain he left the RV at 7:31 and ended up on Hwy95 at 8:19. The shape of the GPS thumbnail for that matches up perfectly. The graphic you linked is more detailed but here is mine which is I think more accurate in that one regard:

There's actually a historically accurate answer to this question, and it is A. [puts Brooks-branded flame retardant suit on]. It was the ability to cover 100 miles in a day that distinguished our ancestors from their prey. Running a mile in 3:50 might allow you to outrun your fellow cavemen, but it wouldn't get you anywhere near an antelope. But a sustained run that allowed you to pursue it until it collapsed from exhaustion? That's where we found our evolutionary advantage in being bipedal. That's how we became the dominant species on the planet. That's our bag, baby, historically speaking.

Running a 3:50 mile is certainly a much rarer skill, arguably even a more valuable one today (since chasing an antelope to the point where it collapses from exhaustion lost some of its cachet after that Whole Foods opened up down the street), but looking at which one has made the bigger impression on our history, the answer is clearly A.

100 miles in 12 hours is probably a fair comparison with the 3:50 mile. Personally I think 100 miles in 24 hours is attainable by any 3:00 marathon runner who has the time to do it. and more akin to a 4:30 mile. Since I believe that any healthy male in their 20s could train to run a 3:00 marathon in 3-4 years then I cannot really give it more than that.

So a guy who was well on his way to smashing the WR until Asher posted on letsruncom is now suddently a rookie who is just learning how to be a multi-day runner?

That post is more damning than anything.

I don't agree that the crew "has been very open". Release the watch files.

Why does he have to finish at Time Square? If he's "run" sufficient miles by Guinness's standards why can't he just finish at the nearest beach on the East coast?

The problem with this idea is that in the time since this thread started and he became aware of it (i.e. the time that they stopped cheating) only two of his eight days have covered more than 50 miles. His high has been 57 miles. He is on track for mid-to-high 40s again today. Unless team Geezer leaves his side and he is unobserved for a good period of time, I don't see him getting back to those types of numbers.

I am sure the ultra guys are good people. But. Their sole task is to keep an eye on RY. According to this latest account, when they went back to find Rob they were informed that he had stopped for a massage. A massage takes a good chunk of time. How long is he actually out of their view to do God only knows what?
