No doubt. The pardon power is a head scratcher.
But the big blind spot was an inept legislative branch that refuses to hold the president accountable. The founders saw very clearly a corrupt guy like Trump for sure. But they didn’t know anything about political parties. And they couldn't foresee that this coequal branch that is supposed to be guided by the voice of the people would prove to be totally inept.
