Good stuff. I saw my name in there a few times. We just didn't have the depth to compete with PSU or FHSU back then.

John Mason of Fort Hays State U won every race in 1968 all the way to the AAU in Van Cortland Park, NY. Beat alot of bigtime D1 guys along the way.
We are all forgetting the legendary John DiCalogero in all of this. I don't think there was a man who donned a KU uniform whose liver received more damage.

Never heard of him. What events and what years did he run?

I rememember alot of these guys. Names I had not thought of in years.
Who were the top runners this fall and who should I look for in the 2010 track season? Any guys/girls that will break into the National honor rolls?
Cross Country and Track State Meet results going back decades.
When I see some of the names of serious studs and what they did at the state meets in high school; I have to wonder how/why they disappeared from the radar in college.
too bad I missed this thread from years back...but I did run a 9:20 at the KU relays in 1980. I'm not on the official list, but no big deal. i wasn't all that good, but it doesn't matter. I just loved to run.
all this is a huge blast from the past from the late 70s ... from Charlie Gray, Tom Logan, Dennis Latham, the whole SMS crew... Brent Steiner was GOD, Steve Smith a monster, and many more. Craig Carter... good guy. Mark Sageser, a gentleman... RIP. Also, I ran a marathon with Kirk Burrows. He was up partying the night before. Never went to bed. A relaxing cruise at the 80 relays...in 2:45.
I left out Bob Luder. What was I thinking?
wasn't bob luder the former KU guy who road raced in the KC area wearing black socks or red socks, looking like a Euro and one time kicked a soccer ball for a 10k race?
No that was Tim Schmid...a William Jewel grad who was an NAIA All-American
Tim Gundy recently ran under 10 for 2 miles at 49 years old.
WOW...that is impressive...good guy as well..
I only ran this race one time but it was a lifelong memeory. I drove down to Atwood with Carl Becker from McCook. I still have the cup they gave out that year. That was 1976
What a great thread - so many names I remember from way back when. It's great to see my older brother is still ranked highly in the 2-mile/3200 - Greg Carpenter of Wyandotte. The stories about Verlyn Schmidt are all spot on. The guy was a real dick to other teams runners and was paranoid about them talking to any of us. My brother and I ran into him at the state meet back in the 90's. He remembered both of us and we had a long conversation with him - good to bury the hatchet with him before he passed on. And clip board Charlie was Charlie Redfield who was our assistant XC coach at Wyandotte around '69 or so. HC Ray Daniels got rid of him and he ended up at SMS with Schmidt. The guy was, um, weird.

Phil_B if you're still around I might have met you at an indoor meet in Lawrence when you were a sophomore or junior. I think Brent Steiner and Steve Smith were in the meet too. One of my college teammates (RIP DG) had gone to your school and we were passing through on a spring break training trip.
I believe it was Tim, Lonnie Gee and Tim Wilson who all ran sub-9 for two miles at the Wichita Running Club's Turkey Trot one year, maybe 1981 or 82?
Where have all the good local runners gone? By local I mean anywhere local. I'm now in Texas and hardly anyone can break 10-min. for 2-miles. It used to be very common back in the late 70's early 80's.
Anyone heard of David Cole?
I found your site and thought I would drop a short message. I'm Dave Cole and I ran at KU in 1982, 83 and 84. I was on the Big 8 Indoor Championship team in 1982. I ran with a number of guys such as Brent Stiner, Tim Gundy, Leonard Martin, and Van Schafer. If any of the old teammates are out there I'd like to hear from you.
