The obesity crisis in this country is not a success of capitalism. It is one of its worst failures. People are getting fat because corporate driven agricultural practices and food production put a premium on profit over health. Grocery store shelves are full of products that are manufactured to sit on shelves for months thanks to tons of preservatives and chemicals and are highly processed in order to escape our natural sense of satiety so people eat more than they should (and then buy more and more). Poor people often have it the worst because their neighborhoods do not have the major grocery chains and they have to shop at Dollar General, etc. where there is very little in the way of fresh produce and most of what is affordable is highly processed garbage. Worse still, many poor people work more than one job, spend long hours commuting to and from work and have little to no time to prepare meals. They end up eating fast food and get fat because they have no time for exercise and even if they have time, there communities have no park space and they cannot afford a membership to a health club.
