Is the hate going to flow on this board if the pole vaulters decide to both take gold and go home?
Tamberi split it because he desperately wanted gold after his injuries, and Barshim had two Olympic silvers. Perfect conditions to set this horrible precedent
I think after missing the US finals last year, Hocker coming back, making the Worlds final, and running a PB shows that he can be competitive on this level. He just wasn’t at the fitness of the other guys this year with a slower start. 6th and 7th in global finals is pretty good for a 22 year old American.
He’s also almost exactly 2 years younger than Nuguse for all of those obsessed with age ;) That being said, excited for the two of them to face off the next couple years!
Also Cole Hocker with a nice 3:30.7 pr. Won’t be happy with 7th and no medal, but it’s good to see him beating the likes of Cheruiyot, Habz, and Laros. Mario Garcia Romo comes in with an expected placing of 6th. Nuguse was in good position right behind Kerr, but got caught behind Laros and Nader right after the bell lap, and that opened too large of a gap to Kerr and Jakob. Nördas might have had the fastest last 400 in the race. Sub-53 for 3:29 high is moving. Odd that he claims to have the slowest 800m speed in the field with a kick like that
It isn't surprising. This was probably his best shot to join Nurmi, El Guerrouj, and Lagat to win the 1500/5000 double. He'll have to take the WR in the 1500 and be ultra fresh for Paris, and I don't see that happening.
The world ranking numbers feel so utterly meaningless; Rai Benjamin listed as being #8...like? I get that they have their formula but it actually feels misleading to put that number up on the screen when introducing him.

I've always found the prospect of going back down to a lower height to decide the winner to be odd. If their score cards are even at this point in the competition, I'm 100% fine with them sharing the gold.
I'm OK with it too, and I would split the title myself, but the posters here are (largely) on the record that sharing the title is for TOTAL LOSERS!
But as a poster replied above, I think these women will be treated very differently.
Since no one has said it, disappointed in the race strategy, but 3:30.70 for Hocker is legit. If I was him I'd be pumped about my performance over the last week. Smooth through the first two rounds, then a big PR in the finals.
When was the last time an American ran 3:30 and was the second fasted American?
