UPDATE: Katelyn Tuohy breaks 4:10 in the 1500m runs 4:09
So there is at least one poster who doesn't understand that it was a relay. We are just trying to get clarification if it is an individual event. Sounds like you are saying that it was a relay and only the total time and place are what matter. Trying to call out the split of Tuohy means that somebody else is at fault for the loss which isn't how team sports and relays are supposed to work.
I don't think she lost the 5000 due to tactical errors. She was a 19 year old running against a very good altitude training red shirt Covid senior running in a type of race she never ran before. I thought she covered the surges very well in that race and was in good position. In retrospect the 3000 may have been a winnable race, but she was coming off of the 5000 the night before and probably did not know how much she had left. Even very experienced runners are going to make tactical mistakes or get caught up and lose winnable races, not to mention a red shirt freshman who never ran in an NCAA finals before, but every college runner has to go through the same learning process.
Maybe Tuohy wins NCAA titles. Maybe she never does. Some of our top pros never one any. Others only won one.
I am a big fan of Touhy, but Gear is a beast. She ran extremely well, and it seemed clear her goal was not time, but to get to the line before Touhy. She didn't even look too spent when she finished. Short of a lead at the hand off, I don't think Touhy would have beaten her no matter what she did. Gear was fast, strong, and smart. Arkansas had a good plan, and Gear took care of business.
Just watched it. Gear was definitely running for time, fitting was their goal was to break the NR. Her PB is 4:09 and she ran 4:10. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight I think drafting and waiting to kick might have been a better option for KT, but there were legitimate tactical reasons to go for a gap to try to avoid Gear's 800 speed also. But Tuohy had to make up a decent amount of real estate and Gear was not going slowly. Doubt it would have mattered in any event.
Btw aren't we all overlooking the fact that Tuohy ran 15:14 solo and then a 4:09 1500 in the span of 7 days? Seems pretty impressive.

I think the coaches at Arkansas were smart to put Gear as the anchor. Just from watching her in interviews, she doesn't seem like she is easily intimidated. A less experienced runner would have maybe panicked at getting the baton just ahead of KT, but Gear was focused.
I misspoke by saying she wasn't running for time. I get that they were going for the record. What I meant was that, watching the race, I had the sense that however fast KT ran, Gear would have still finished just ahead. Her experience really showed.
Well she is a red shirt senior who has run at the Olympic trials. Plus she has placed well at this distance in the NCAAs and has a good PB at the distance. No reason for her to be intimidated by a college sophomore.
I think Tuohy is going to be a better 1500/mile runner than people seem to expect when it is all said and done.
Tuohy is running a PR in every race of late. Considering she bettered her PR by 3 seconds in a 1500, a considerable accomplishment, it would have been unreasonable for her to break her PR by the necessary 5 seconds to win this race. She should be proud of having been the only runner to do so, even if the outcome wasn’t optimal. You guys on this forum are pretty hard on a 20 year old with plenty of years yet to establish world class, Olympic credentials. When I saw Shaw give up her lead the outcome was sealed. Tuohy made a heroic run at a win but her 4:09 performance is nothing to sneeze at…give her a break, guys. She deserves better!
I said I thought it was smart for the coaches at Arkansas to choose someone like Gear with experience who could handle the pressure for the anchor, for all of the reasons you just stated but also because KT is a very good 1500 runner and not a typical sophomore.
I don't think I have ever said in any post on this board that KT would not be a good 1500 runner. She already is, which is why I thought Gear's performance was impressive. Even with Gear's impressive resume, she would be a fool to take KT lightly, even if she is just a sophomore.
Agreed. She ran a great race. And correct. That is a 3 second pr in an event where that is pretty significant.
You cannot run a PR in a relay. Unless you are talking about a relay split PR. That is completely different than an open race PR.

Well, my splits are different than everybody else's but I would say 4:09 high or 4:10. Both she and Gear were 3:22 for the last 1200.
Not to worry…before all is said and done she will win her share of NCAA titles among other titles. As a Sophomore she’s already in an elite class of runners with a good chance of winning every time she puts on her spikes on race day. By the time she’s a Senior others will fear her speed, consistency and competitiveness. She’s a fierce competitor who hates to lose and learns from her errors. I have no doubt she’ll break 4 minutes for the 1500, 8:45 for the 3000 and 15 minutes for the 5000 some day…

Perhaps you’re too young to have heard the axiom ‘you learn from your mistakes more often than from successes’. Show me the successful runner that never loses. Losses have their utility. Same as successful entrepreneurs. For every success one generally experiences 10 failures…
