I think they will be using whatever happens over the next few months as an example when teaching social contract theory in the future. Hopefully not as an example of what happened when the state reneged

You guys talk about fascism etc, aren't you listening? The govt is implementing the lockdowns that the citizens want and if they don't do it the state premier or even the PM won't even last to the next election, let alone be voted out there.
That doesn't happen in USA
We don't operate like the US which is frankly, a mess, a f*ck up, with governors all doing their own crap, chaos...spend some time on that and stop your obsession with us.
You can no longer fly to Europe, we will be going there in two to three months once we are over 80%, and in fact we should hit 90%

Apparently the Australian citizens peacefully and silently protesting don’t “want” the lockdowns.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theepochtimes.com/silent-protests-across-australia-against-covid-19-lockdowns-several-arrested_3972878.html/ampYes, In the US we try to decentralize power so it’s harder for the federal government to restrict things like peaceful protests or leaving your home after some arbitrary curfew time.
Americans can still go to Europe and the rest of your last statement is speculation. I’m guessing most Australians wouldn’t have guessed they’d be among the strictest lockdown nations in the world (if not the strictest) a few months ago.

Look at your beautifully quoted post on the "I’m on Level 4 lockdown in Auckland. Ask me anything." thread:

Yes, you are right. You do not understand.
If it is not about money, then explain the rollout in DRC and Mozambique etc etc which are at 1%

Social contract theory is actually to do with liberty not fascism. Also I’m an Australian in Australia (Sydney) who is well and truly sick of lock downs.
Some people want them but some people are also scared of their own shadows. Some (many) other people would like to get back to living their lives with the ability to move freely (i.e. beyond 5km of their homes) and more or less do as they please.
I’m vaccinated and am firmly against vaccine passports and would like everything fully reopened as soon as possible. There is a point where all rational, consenting adults will have had the chance to get vaccinated and those who do not, that is their choice and they live with the consequences (good or bad). Those who choose not to, well I’m sure they will still pay taxes and GST on things so I don’t quite understand how a government can take from them on the one hand and deny them access to the broader society through the ‘passport’ on the other.
Many things are wrong here right now and I say that as a comfy, white, well to do person in a nice part of town with next to no cases or problems. But I feel for those less fortunate who just want to get back to a normal life , for themselves, their kids, their family , friends, maybe their business, etc.

This man is simply not a true Aussie, or at least not a patriotic one.
99.9% of Aussies support the current lockdown and most of those, myself included, what to lockdown harder. We need 0 community transmission and if that means we put protesters into forced lockdown camps, forcefully vaccinate all citizens or have full martial law around the country then so be it.
COVID is by far the most serious threat Australia has ever faced and we must meet this threat head on.

Exactly.
The United States is an absolute mess and the Americans here should focus on their on Covid issues, of which there is plenty.
Australia needs a strong leader with full absolute power to do what needs to be done to eliminate covid. Scott Morrison doesn’t appear to be the man for the job unfortunately as he is now wavering from his 0 covid policy.

Spreading the disease while flouting public health rules does. Democracies are about protecting the vulnerable - an alien concept to you, I know.
This thread is vintage Letsrun. Right wing nutjobs from a failed democracy called the USA get together to project their delusions on to other countries they know nothing of. Losers love company.

What kind of argument is that? Hitler also was elected and had the support of the population. Its still facism

The comparisons to Hitler and fascism are getting old. Can you guys please come up with some new material? 0/10
A better comparison to make is China early last year when the 'outbreak' (or however you want to refer to it) first became widely publicised. I remember watching it and discussing it with others; the empty streets, police stopping people and sending them home... It all seemed quite laughable and absurd yet a year and half later, here we are...

I wish we in Australian followed the Chinese model of forcefully locking people in homes.
The “free “and liberal democratic model of government no longer works in today’s covid world. We need a strong centralized government that is willing to restrict the freedom of people for their own good & for the good of society. I won’t go as far as democracy needs to be suspended indefinitely but obviously no anti-lockdown candidate should be allowed to stand for an ejection.
The government must not only restrict the movement of people if necessary but also must restrict the speech of rabble rousers that cause the pro-death riots we saw across our country last week. This pro-death and anti-lockdown speech indirectly causes Covid deaths and should be treated as such. This new government must also be given a free hand over the economy so we can drastically rearrange society to fit the reality of Covid.

That is something you would expect with China though, and I agree that their strategy was unnecessarily restrictive. However, comparisons to fascism and tyranny are still not valid in my opinion. State governments, and the federal government under certain circumstances, have the constitutional authority and are supported by centuries of legal precedence to take steps to mitigate public health crises. These steps can include quarantining, business restrictions and other curtailments. I'm just trying to better understand the argument of people who are inclined to call these measures tyranny, violations of freedom and rights and the constitution. The effect of pandemic on businesses and people's livelihoods has been disastrous and tragic, but my opinion is that public health policy and financial assistance by governments are to blame for that mostly; public health measures implemented have been for the most part common sense, even if they were communicated terribly and inconsistently to the public.
