Public schools are the main reason that the US is a world leader. Everyone benefits so everyone pays. Every person gets at least a basic education that allows them to read street signs, instructions, work manuals, do basic math. Companies can hire anyone and expect a basic level of education / competence. Without education, many would be virtually unemployable and the country would rapidly become a 2nd, then 3rd world country like all others who do not educate their populace.
