Poor guy can't seem to catch a break. First the anemia, now an infection.
I love his channel and his approach to training is really interesting to watch but...someone has to say it....if your entire brand is based on 'training harder not smarter', you introduce triple mileage days, you deliberately go into multiple marathons and now an ultra race overtrained and end up racing them pretty hard, it's really no surprise that at some point his body says no. Be that serious iron deficiency that requires intravenous iron infusion, or now what sounds like it could be some sort of autoimmune response/ being more susceptible to serious infection? I honestly wish him well and a speedy recovery but I'm sure he'd be the first person to admit that his fairly unique training style is largely responsible for the recent health scares he has had rather than not being able to 'catch a break'. He is clearly under the impression that more is always better at the moment but I'm hoping he can rein it in a little and hit some target races fully fit and healthy.
I've had iron deficient anemia before and I wasn't even running at the time, nor doing any other form of endurance sports. So I don't think one can attribute the anemia to his training unless you're his doctor. Even then, it's not always clear. My doctor certainly never explained why I was iron deficient, just told me to take supplements. As for the infection, he showed a picture of a wound on his hand from where the infection spread. A bacterial infection can happen to anyone regardless of their health or the strength of their immune system. That's why they tell you to go to the ER whenever you're bitten by a cat, for example. We'll have to wait and see.
also Bester currently getting roasted on his IG post advertising Klarna
Personally I'm surprised he doesn't get more complaints about his 'can I go from last to first in X parkrun' videos tbh, although there were a handful of comments deleted from that IG post today too
I just love how deeply uncreative and phone-it-in these shoetubers are. They’re all cycling through this already tired out limp dick concept.
probably indicative of why so many of them can’t hold a regular job so they have to grift and shill on social media like used car salesmen.
oh, one other thing shoetubers: we don’t give 2 sh*ts about your hotel room. It’s a hotel room. 5 year olds get excited about them. And wow, your air bnb has a bed and a sh*tter! It’s usually just someone’s sh*tty house that you’re squatting in for a weekend, so maybe skip the “tour”.

Yes, but this is what the game is, as long as people engage with it and brands reward it

It's such a low quality bit of grifting too - can't even spell the name of the company right in his video. But I guess as long as it's folded into enough of the other 'top tips for 5k training', 'what I drink in a day' etc type content most people won't notice and he can keep the money coming in.
Little irony that his club, coaching, kit, and whatsapp gait analysis is up there with the most expensive you can get in the UK running scene pushing the demand for klarna type buy now pay later anyway

Introducing your personal n=1 into this doesn't really mean anything though does it? Especially as Jake himself acknowledged in his anemia video that his high mileage at altitude as well as footstrike hemolysis were very likely causes of his anemia and that he wasn't consuming enough iron to make up for his 250km weeks in the heat.
It is extremely well established that overtraining weakens the immune system, leaving us much more susceptible to infection. What's controversial about that?
Keep your blinders on if you wish, but if you think that a young fit guy in his twenties getting back to back medical care for anemia and then hospitalised with a random infection has absolutely nothing to do with him racking up 280km weeks with triple daily sessions as well as race effort marathons and an ultra in the last few weeks, then you need to reexamine Occam's Razor.
You might be absolutely right, and Thomas may be implying that the shoes start to hurt AFTER three hours. I only brought it up because Thomas usually looks down on runners who take over 4 hours and considers himself a very different kind of runner — even though many of his marathons have been over 4 hours. He also immediately made excuses for his London Marathon time by saying the day was hot (which it was!), even though the time was completely in line with his other results and was very typical for him.
well he's standing in his spanx in the latest BITR london recap video (GRWM!) basically with his d*** out so there's I sight I wasn't expecting to see 😭

Holy crap, was that shot really necessary? The whole video was just disgusting, but that little bulge shot took it to the next level
Comparing himself to what he believes he will be the 1% that can handle high mileage as well?
we all love a good RTJ story of stupidly high Cam Levins mileage, but this guy throws up every workout and has kids. What makes him think he can get close to a 100 mile week yet alone be Driven all summer and maintain that for a long time?
These self-indulgent race recap videos are so damn funny. The thought of sitting down in front of a camera for idk, an hour? (37 minute video) to talk about a pretty non-unique experience is so incredibly goofy lol

It is pretty insane behavior. I guess at this point it's just normalized but you're right, it's downright goofy. The slower you get, the goofier it gets but even if you're on the faster side, it's weird as an adult. I can't imagine someone like Mantz or CJ setting up a camera, hitting record, then walking back out and through the door, sitting down, and looking at the camera saying "I did not want to make this video" after a stinker. It's the same brand of weird behavior where people feel the need to grab their phone and start recording when their crying/being emotional. Why is that your first instinct. But hey, I guess some people out there eat that up which is even more concerning.

I actually watched that "recap"
Its "11yo went on holiday and made a vlog for the class" level.
Crap narration, no idea to the story, not even any "in race" footage from a gopro. No mention of times. Absolute scraping the barrel stuff
Honestly, it points to them realising BITR is all over and they need to provide content for contractual reasons to New Balance. (NB don't do this for a quick mention! They want minimum of 7mins of footage)
