“Not David. No affiliation. Just someone watching all this with a pretty good BS meter.
'Stop digging' is such a tidy phrase. It flatters your sense of rectitude while pretending to offer advice.
But what you're actually saying is: I’m uncomfortable with his visibility, his vulnerability, his refusal to disappear after failure. And so you recode that discomfort as wisdom. Bakhtin would call it monologic speech—the voice of authority disguised as consideration, expecting only silence in return.
But here’s the thing: he’s not digging. He’s standing in the open, handing out the shovel, saying, Look, this is what it feels like to fall short and still want to be seen. And some of you are furious about that. Not because it’s performative. But because it isn’t.
Ivan Klíma once wrote that what people can’t abide is 'defiance in the face of judgment.' That’s what’s really bothering you. Not the jokes, not the DNF, not even the taper. Just the refusal to perform shame 'correctly.'
And honestly, if that’s your threshold for outrage, maybe you’re the one holding the shovel."

I highly doubt you have "no affiliation" with him. I've never seen another poster with your unique 'qualities' on the boards and you appear HIGHLY invested in discussions pertaining to David.
That's such a good watch. They all looked amazing, the turnover is incredible to watch as a third-rate hobbyjogger. Wightman looking like himself again is the big takeaway for me. He's a genuinely good guy and these last two years have been brutal for him. I'd love to see him back on the podium on Tokyo. Brazier looks fine to me. Totally in control. In the interviews he's done since his return he's emphasised keeping training at a B+ level as he's managing his body. The best advice I ever got from a fellow runner was that you can't win training.
Boulder Boys clowning on David again on the Western States recap podcast. First Seth talking about how David put in an insane surge just to be at the front at the top of Escarpment. Separately they gave major props to Adam Peterman for gutting it out and walking in/finishing at 4am. "That's giving the race the respect it deserves!"
I tried listening to the SWAP podcast but could only make it through about a half hour of their therapy session. The guy is so unbelievably self-involved. He was seriously wounded hearing that people were saying mean things about him on the YouTube stream, but takes zero accountability for the hate he gets. He says it's a byproduct of his vulnerability. That is such nonsense. There are many reasons why people hate him, and his feigned "vulnerability" isn't one of them.
What a total contrast between guys like Seth Ruhling, Matt Daniels, Kilian, Peterman vs. David Roche. He's not a good representative of the sport. Total loser.
I was coming here to post the comment by Seth… I knew he was talking about Roache immediately.. but yeah, of course he sprinted to be first for the cameras.. laughable.
this came up on my morning group run - so many people wait so long to get a chance to line up for this race and he dropped because it was hard. I get that people have serious injuries that lead to a DNF but this was just mental weakness. even his athlete Hans talked about how hard and difficult it was - he mentioned something mid race that he might have a heart attack etc. much respect that he finished despite the slow down in the last 20 miles. He must have picked up that mental strength from another coach.
