Each team has 7 runners. Each team's score is the sum of the places for it's first 5 runners. If the 7 runners on a team get 1st, 5th, 9th, 12th, 50th, 55th, and 63rd, their score is 1+5+9+12+50 = 77. The 6th and the 7th person don't impact the scoring, they are there as backups in case someone in the team's top 5 has a bad day
Lowest score wins.
There are other more detailed rules about tie breakers, and for individuals participating in the race without a complete team. But that's the gist of it.
Actually number 6 and 7 impact the scoring by adding a point to the people behind them I believe. So if you put your number 7 in front of another team 5th scorer, your number 7 score won't be just ignored as in case of individual runners
100%. I meant 6th and 7th don't impact their own team's scoring - but as you said they can and do impact other teams scores if they impact the places of other team's top 5s.
NAU top 5 with this squad is super impressive tbh. Santiago Prosser is one of the most unlikely 3x All-Americans I can think of. Grotenhuis and Nyoak projected to score for them and they never looked right all year, yet somehow the Jacks rallied and even (poetically) beat OSU
Rocky Hansen blew up over the last mile or so but Wake should be a podium pick for next year. Notre Dame also looks to have a bright future, especially considering all the talent they brought in that redshirted this year
Not a huge fan of Carlson's roster management but gotta hand it to them, Buffs took a step forward over the course of the season
I was rooting for him to repeat. It sounds like he had a tough time with the injury that he had to work through and to see him back on top is awesome. I think he interviews really well, and I love that he had a plan A (which implies that he had a plan B, etc.). So few athletes talk about the strategy side of xc. He has such humility for someone who has had so much success.
Also, even though I like Parker Wolfe as a runner I was glad Blanks smoked him this time after the way Wolfe acted over the Olympic qualifying. Blanks got in fairly by the rules and it wasn't his fault Wolfe didn't have the qualifyer. When they both show up 100% Blanks has the clear edge.
Exciting race and the coverage was about as good as you could expect in men’s race, although commentaries seemed to hold on to Osu still contending after it was clear they were out. As soon as messoudi started dropping back I knew it was over. Shame about the Iowa state runner falling. As someone pointed out it could have produced a very close team score situation if there was no fall. All of Iowa states top 4 are internationals but their fifth is from Iowa and ran a perfect race. Byu employed their usual go out really hard and die but just barely held on. Will be interesting to here when Samuel lost shoe and how. Would have been great to see him and blanks really go at it. I heard he fell in regionals also so maybe something he needs to work on. Impresses with Dylan Schubert and Furman. Most of their roster is from the southeast and young, finishing right behind Oregon and Washington. I don’t know anything about the furman coach but they appear to know what they are doing. Crazy how deep ncaa,guys with guys with 2810 prsfinishing in the 100s and Olympian’s not scoring. Will be very interesting to see how roster changes affect sport. Somewhat surprised Oregon/washington/stanford can’t put it together anymore but I think they appear to be more middle distance focused.
Finally super bummed my Portland pilots didn’t qualify. They were a few points behind cbu at regionals who finished 13th. On a great day they could have been right up there in that range. But they didn’t get the points in October.
Will be interesting to here when Samuel lost shoe and how. Would have been great to see him and blanks really go at it.
that's a good point.
I guess we'll have to wait until track, but Blanks runs the 5K and Samuel the 10K outdoor. I guess they can battle it out again in the indoor 5K, if they both run it. I want to see a rematch with two shoes per runner!

Oregon’s #1 is Aidan Smith, local guy, sophomore, he was in the same crazy class w BirnBaum, Burns, etc and he was only a 8:14 3k runner so not a blue chip guy. So Jerry has developed someone really well so far

Great races for Nova's Liam Murphy 9th and Marco Langon 15th, last 1K fastest of guys 7-14. Langon only turned 20 last week of August. Really gritty effort for Gary Martin at 13 , struggling last 1K in 2:56.7, but by far his best XC race at the right time!

Grotenhuis is a great runner when healthy but he barely ran this season so I expect he was injured, the way he fell off the last mile tells me his fitness isn't where it should have been, so probably lots of time off. Prosser is always consistent, usually finishes in that 20-30 range.

Do you think Murphy might be a 5K guy long-term? I have no idea but he is impressive in XC, though obviously 3:36.38 last year is great in college.
Is OSU the biggest underperformance in nationals history? 256 points for 8th place is brutal given their talent and last year's performance. If you just scored their 3rd and 4th runners alone they still lose to BYU and Iowa State, oof.
Most shocking, they were never in it for a second. Did their 5-6-7 slip off the starting line or something? Why on earth were they back in the 150's off a conservative 1st 1k?
