Some people will think I’m “accepting mediocrity” or some shiite but I think if he finishes 7th in 2:09:50 on this course it will be a solid cap to a good year for him.
Mantz was slowing at around mile 24. Clayton was slightly closing in, but Mantz closed really well. Mantz was the fastest runner from 25.2mi to 26mi according to the NYRR tracker
Top american women less than 20 minutes off the world record!
What’s your point? The women’s winner was 15 minutes off the world record and the top American was 17 minutes off. NYC is not only hilly, but is run incredibly slow and tactically.
Loved every second of both races today. Fun racing, close finishes. If you want to run fast go to Berlin & get paced. Women's & men's finishes were both decided by less than 15 seconds. Fast times are fun. Stuff like this is too.
Only 7 guys beat 2:09:56 (winning time of 2:07:39 just 2 minutes 17 seconds faster)..just goes to show how crazy fast Ruth's WR is even though New York is slower than Chicago, especially when considering the winning women's time here was 2:24:35.
It’s too bad Mantz wasn’t running the marathon in 2020. If he can run 2:09 flat at NYC, he would have run 2:05:XX at the marathon project where guys like Hehir and Droddy dropped 2:09s

Yeah it's impressive how close things are. Apart from the course benig harder the fact that it's a women's only race and there are no pacers are also huge factors.
I honestly think that the women's only world record is the 'real' world record because it's equivalent to the men's as you don't get a pacer taking you all the way to the finish line.
Very surprising to see Lindwurm/Popehn struggle as much as she did. She fell off at about mile 18 off a relatively pedestrian pace and had to jog it in to finish. Obviously a big year for her with several massive training cycles and races. But with nothing mentioned about injury or fatigue heading into this one, that's got to be disappointing.

I’m not even sure if this is worth commenting on, it’s like comparing cross-country courses. And no way is there any comparison, Chicago is basically a flat racetrack that is paced and this is so much more about tact tactics and racing.
