Editor's note on 7/1/2024- This 3-year-old thread is getting a lot of clicks as lots of people are googling Nikki Hiltz after NBC published an article "Transgender runner Nikki Hiltz is headed to the Paris Olympics" on her making the Olympic team. The article did not explain that Hiltz's is a biological female. Hiltz also is also not on testosterone as World Athletics forbids that.
My favorite part of this thread is that everyone who stumbles upon it via Google is greeted at the top of each page with "Editor's not on 7/1/202 " Classic Letsrun editorial quality. Just so perfect you'd think they did it on purpose.
I'm not sure exactly what you're saying. Of course the editorial note was put up on purpose. I just cleaned it up a bit and put a link to the article.
There is a lot of confusion on Nikki's sex from uninformed people and the note is helpful in light of the NBC article. Many people assume Nikki is a male competing in the women's category which isn't the case.
For the vast majority of people when they hear "transgender" athlete they assume the person is trying to compete in a category that does not match-up with their biological sex. That is not the case with Nikki.
I don't understand the vitriol towards Hiltz. This is a person competing in the category appropriate to their biological sex, so no issues there.
you don’t understand the vitriol? You do realize that roughly 50% of Americans hate queer people and want them labeled criminals or worse?
These people know that you can’t say “I hate that queer so much.” (At least not for a few more months until after the election) Sonthey say things like: “She has a biological advantage!” “He’s a man running against women!”
Since that logic doesn’t apply here, they have to say “Why do I have to use those pronouns?!”
If Nikki used she/her pronouns, they would look for any mention of their sexuality or their partner and say, “why are they shoving it down our throats??”
Don't get bogged down in the specifics of what these people are complaining about. They hate the queerness. They just try to find the most acceptable way to say it.
There are 1% as many comments about Nico Young because he quietly runs hus races. Hiltz requires people to speak about her in the way that she dictates. Imagine if the Johnson brothers required us to say that they are handsome geniuses everytime that we mentioned them. That is what she is doing. People can't require others to speak about them in a certain way. That is the extreme narcissism. That is Hiltz.

So as long as LGBTQ+ athletes are quiet, you accept them?

70% of Americans support same sex marriage what are you talking about
Nikki is now the latest chewtoy of the, "based" and, "anti-woke".
I don't wish this kind of stress to be brought on anyone. I don't really see the upside for Hiltz in walking towards this, however.
But I have to look at other athletes. Many runners don't run on Sundays. Why? We can guess. But maybe its just a rest day. Regardless of the reason, they don't share.
My inner life is personal, and I don't seek out public validation for my feelings. I don't think this makes me unusual. I always try to assume people are being authentic and sincere, but when they demand attention for something which is purely internal, I have to wonder, "why?!?"
American long-distance runner Nikki Hiltz, who identifies as transgender non-binary, won the women's 1,500 on Sunday and qualified for the U.S. Olympics team.
Accept them how exactly? If Cole Hocker requires the announcers to describe him as handsome when he is in a 1500 race of male competitors where looks don't matter, I would have the same issue as Hiltz requiring them to refer to her as they when she is competing in a women's race where gender does not matter.

You should refer to Hiltz as they whether it’s race time or not. That’s the point.
If you’re not describing Hocker as handsome every time you mention him, that is a fault on your part.

C'mon man, it's not that hard. 49% of Americans don't give a scheet, maybe 1% "hate queers". The whole, "I think I’m this so call me this" thing is ridiculous. 5 year-olds think they're tigers, they grow out of it or they become that special cousin in the family. You know, Aunt Sue's youngest... (everyone nods)
