This is something that some folks like to tell themselves (and anyone else who will listen). However, the demographic you describe (bitter old men and sometimes women) cannot possibly amount to more than 15% of the electorate. And yet, Trump wins 50% of the vote and has 40% approval ratings.
There is something else going on.
I used to have the opinion that you could look at either political party and find 5 - 10% who were legitimate nutjobs. And yet, with the current GOP, that percentage appears to be closer to 90%. I have had to update my understanding of the prevalence of nutjobism.
I would suggest that a similar update might be due for your own understanding here. The Trumpettes are a whole lot larger than the "bitter old men" demographic.

The "why" to me is pretty clear. A few morally bankrupt billionaires (is there another kind?) bought up media sources and turned them into a cesspool of right wing lies. Fact checking was the first thing to go. The motive is profit, but not from the media source. The real profit comes from installing a corrupt government willing to hand over the keys of the kingdom to oligarchs. These media companies came with a big audience and they could be fed a constant stream of things that would make them mad, get them engaged and on board with the "anything for billionaires" agenda. That stream only needs the slightest basis in reality if the audience seeks no other source, and most don't.
Trump is not popular. Maga wants desperately for this to be false. But needing to rig elections, anger/scare voters, divide America, buy media companies show this. Even with all that, they get 49% of the vote at best. Unfortunately, that was enough. Now we all pay for that with a tanking economy and massive corruption.

He would talk about his life in the military in almost every speech, in particular the death defying dangers he faced in his many years “fight for freedom” while in Vietnam. He stated that “the battles were violent and long, but there was no going back” - And then it happened, Blumenthal was found out to be a FRAUD. The soldiers in his so-called “platoon” came forward and said that they had no idea who this guy was. He was revealed, broke down and admitted, tears flowing from his eyes, that he LIED, a Whopper, one that lasted 20 year. This guy shouldn’t even be in the U.S. Senate. It should be investigated, and Justice should be sought. Right now there is a Congressman sitting in prison for lying about his past during a campaign. Well, those lies were nothing compared to those of Richard “Da Nang Dick” Blumenthal, perhaps the greatest phony in the history of the United States Senate. He should be allowed to speak no longer!
