That was my point, and I think you missed it. McConnell didn't simply need a Republican President to appoint judicial nominees with greater ease, he only needed 51 votes in the Senate (and a Republican President to nominate them). Reid got rid of the filibuster for appointments to make it easier to fill them under Obama. Then Trump won an upset victory, ended up with a majority in the Senate...and voila, Reid's maneuver backfired on him. Spectacularly.
