FWIW, Caitlin had documented ED issues before Richmond and before Alberto.

This whole story is tremendously sad. When I saw Mary had posted something on Instagram this morning I hoped it was about some kind of breakthrough or new team, etc. In a way it was, but just not the way I expected.

As someone else suggested, Alberto's Catholicism is very offputting at this point. No one cares that you go to Mass every week, you damaged a lot of lives and have shown no remorse.

I think when she actually moved there he began to treat her more like a pro, controlling more elements of her life including strength work, recovery and of course diet.

Just the running version of the me too movement. I remember reading all the countless articles about Alberto and his world class coaching. Go to the end of the world and back for me, blah blah blah

Now the same people talking about how diabolical he is for a moment of fame. Funny how quickly we can shift the media against someone

Look at the comments on her IG post. Hundreds of runners who have no clue the full story just dying to join the me too cult.

I do recall calling my wife to the TV while watching a track meet because the Cain's weight gain and decreased performance were quite surprising. She could not continue as the fastest girl in America with that trend line. I interpreted her return to the family home shortly afterwards as a desire to be a teen for a bit longer. She made the right choice if she wasn't ready to do on with her life's work.

Mary was a high school girl who was not emotionally prepared or mature enough to enter a professional running career. I sensed that from day one. While I think Alberto should have realized this, I think this is about Mary playing the blame game to explain her own failures. When she realizes that she was just not emotionally prepared, she can begin her healing.

That's my thought. But having 5 fractures in 1 year, which i think how long she lasted there, is pretty crazy. It made me think that some of them happened while she was still in HS.

Maybe,5 fractures in a year seem impossible. Unless she got multiple at once, how would she recover from each fracture, then return to running enough to get another fracture, 5 times in a year?

female runners will always lose weight in their quest to be the best runner possible. this will never change. anybody who is not at the top will look for what they can do to get better.

if it works, everybody is happy. when it doesn't work, you will get this reaction. and there will be more of this.

but girl runners ( and guys) will continue to lose weight as long as running remains a competitive sport.

Salazar deserves plenty of blame. but this is not a black and white situation.

Yes, while calcium is important for health. Just as important, if not more so is having a postive nitrogen balance(that means eating enough calories/quality protein).

Good point. According to Mary: "Cain said that Nike did not have a certified sports psychologist nor a certified nutritionist, and that Salazar “created an arbitrary number of 114 lbs.”

Why didn't Al Sal hire a nutritionist for Mary?

Hasay is a damn liar about eating more than 5000 Kcalories a day.

A girl her size needs about 1200 a day basal.

If she is running 20 miles, add in 1700. Is she doing 140mpw?

A few hundred more for weight lifting.

Much less than 4000, probably closer to 3000.

Plus, who the hell knows how much energy she gets from all the PEDs and "supplements" that she gobbles every day.

5000 kcal is a whopping big volume of food.

So MANY thoughts about this.

Firstly, I am so glad Cain decided to come forward. It seems like throughout the day her voice has been the most resonant. Her voice has been promoted in less than 24 hours more than Kara, Steve or any of the others have in four years.

This is NOT a knock on Kara or Steve. It's just an observation. Unquestionable abuse of a minor>weird drug grey area violations. This story is going to make it difficult for Alberto to recover from, and it will make it harder for him to appeal. I wonder if he'll write another "open letter".

Her story also indirectly puts the feet of NOP members to the fire in a way that hasn't been done before. Cain was self harming, and Jordan still has a post up talking about how Alberto is a 'father figure'. Shannon is whining about how Steve told her nice things about Alberto before joining, even though she never left. But was Shannon a witness to what was happening to Cain? and Craig... They just come across as more aloof than ever.

As for Caitlin Chock--well Caitlin was a member of NOP in it's baby years, and its possible Salazar still had good intentions and big dreams of getting American running back to where it once was. Maybe Chock didn't bear witness to it all going sour.

If you don't want to be skinny don't try to be a national/world class distance runner.

Was there a time when people thought Mary looked underweight while she was training at NOP? I remember people on Letsrun discussing the fact that she seemed to have gained weight. Does anybody have real statistics on her weight history? I don't understand the whole premise of LOSS of weight in Mary's case as a reason for her being unhealthy. Maybe she couldn't handle the workouts at her age, maybe she was not emotionally prepared, maybe she missed her family and boyfriend, maybe she did not control her diet, but was Mary ever underweight at some time?

I'd honestly like to know the full Cain running story. Here is what I've picked up thus far.

Cain started as a middle school/freshman phenom on the Bronxville XC/Track team. As a freshman, she ran with the girls team and did well, running a 2:03 800 which was a big eye opener to the level of her talent. The Bronxville team is a powerhouse with a long time coach there. Things seemed to be shaping up nicely.

Then during indoor track her sophomore Cain stopped working with the girls coach. That was a little strange. Maybe a falling out? But I really wonder what caused this. Liz Weil references animosity from her former high school teammates. But going into outdoor track, Cain's coaches were the boys team coaches.

Then her junior year, it turned out that Cain could no longer be coached by the boys team coaches because it violated NY State rules. So she was just....running by herself? Coaching herself? She was still competing on the Bronxville team, just not being coached? That was when Salazar stepped in for good. It's pretty cringeworthy that quote from her parents, about how Salazar was a god send? Yikes.
