I remember your dad, Dave Peterson, from Rosedale High and K-State. He vaguely looked like Pekka Vasala, the 1500m Olympic champ from Finland in 1972-Munich. I think that he might have got a free beer or two out of that resemblence. Your dad, Jerome Howe and Clardy Vinson had some great DMR's on the Midwest Relay circut in the late 60s, early 70s.

I remember a couple decent runners from TW in the early 70s when I was in law school at Washburn. Rick Maloney and Rick Tyler.

congratulations to the Lawrence High School Lions on winning the State Cross Country Championship; defeating perenial powerhouse Shawnee Mission Northwest. It will be interesting to see if they are 'here to stay' or were a one year wonder.

No reason to think they can't be very good again next year. They will only lose their #2 runner. This should give them (and others in the state) plenty of motivation for the future. It's good for the sport. From what I've heard some of the SMNW guys got what they deserved.

a couple of my teammates sent off for those Lydiard flats. yeah, remember how it was cool and fun to try and find a special shoe that you couldn't get at your local sporting goods store? a certain model, a certain color that nobody in your school or city had? It was an art, almost a hobby. Nil Brothers in Kansas City, kansas or Francis sporting goods in Lawrence.(for those of us in KC). I got some rare, imported Ontisuka Tiger spikes at Nil Bros. and some Red Gazelle training flats in Lawrence,(one of our school colors), when nobody had anything but the blue ones or the Azteca Gold model in Kansas City. I got my first pair of Adidas Tokyo spikes at Dales Hardware, in OP, believe it or not. The local sporting good stores only had Spotbuilt, looking like they were from the 1950s. Those days are over. More work but more fun. Once the Footlockers, Athletes Foot and Nike Stores hit the scene in the mid to late 70s, the 'art of finding the rare shoe' was over.

HEY, oldtimers! remember this race? The best race in the off season that no one outside of western kansas or southern colorado had ever heard of; but look at the names of national and international stars and stars to be in this race. don't let the slow times fool you, it was most likely over 90 degrees and humid; and the 'off peak' time of year.

....since I recognize so many of these names! That was a great era in Kansas/Colorado running talent; and into the 80s.

Who is favored to win the Big 12 Indoor this year? KU lost to MU in an indoor dual a couple of weeks ago.

Gary Gregory has to be "Blade". He ran for Goddard in the mid-70's and was a VERY strong roadracer through his 20's.

I remember GG running out here in So. Cal in the mid 80s. A good runner. I think I was winding down my running career when he was running for smtc, after I was gone from club and running on my own. Don't remember running against him out here. jps. Any of you oldtimers remember this prep phenom, from my old high school? Any stories?

Saw him run at The Trials in '68. I was surprised that he was fairly short and stocky, for a hurdler.

The good old Lake Atwood 10 miler...I never could understand how that race could be so good but it was...Lake Atwood was a small lake that was dried up most of the time and it took 8 times around for the 10 miler...being the last Saturday in July it was always hot...and they gave, of all things, a stocking cap to all the finishers...

I remember going up on Friday with Ted Crank and Steve Pierce and stayed at a hotel in Colby...the race was at night so we would stay in Colby as long as we could before heading up north to Atwood...

how is this years version of the Kansas Relays shaping up? Anybody notable running it? Who should I look for in the high school, college and Open divisions. I plan on going Friday and Saturday this year.
