There's a coherent argument for tariffs somewhere -- not one i agree with but it's not total babbling.
However the actions don't align with any of the coherent arguments.
If this is about national security and re-industrialization, then tariffing socks from Bangladesh makes no sense.
If this is about 'fairness' that some countries sell to us more than they buy, then are we demanding that Lesotho citizens buy Salesforce CRM subscriptions to offset the diamonds they sell us?
If this is a negotiating tactic, then it will do nothing to encourage re-industralization.
If this is about fostering in an era of truly free trade, then complaints about 'fairness' centered on trade deficits make no sense.
There are tariffs policies that would logically match each of those 4 goals, this policy matches none of them. Total random flailing.
At least Trump has already relaxed his tough-guy no negotiating stance lol
