i think a lot of people are looking at David the wrong way, it's not that he's narcissistic etc., i think rather he's incredibly insecure. i believe he's basically failed at football (look up his stats), failed at law (lasted just a few years before being washed out), and then stumbled across this niche area of the sport, where people like dean K and goggins can make a living. he's just crazy exited to have found some success and is going to milk it. milking it requires a lot of aggrandizing on social media.
As someone who knows David fairly well, I agree that he’s extremely insecure. But I also think he’s narcissistic — narcissism is driven by insecurity, as a way to cope with low self esteem.
Yup, this is the perfect description (also someone who knows him well personally) — I think it's funny how virtually everyone, presumably, coming to their defense have parasocial relationships with them created through the podcast and social media. Those of us who know the real Roche's are finally coming out of the woodwork and if this is what leads to the exposure they need I am all for it.

okay, then give us the goods. Tell us a story. You know them personally? We're all ears (or eyes, rather)

Or they have been in a "coaching relationship" with them, so part of their SWAP cult essentially. Whatever that means these days given their large scale scam of essentially copy and pasting workouts in the same kind of template plan for dozens and dozens of people (if not over 100) at a time and calling it 'personal coaching' that is 'individualized.' But then also having the audacity to charge $140/month or whatever for it.
You don't even have to know them personally to clearly see all the BS, contradictions and inconsistencies they are projecting across social media and on these Youtube videos now. You just need half an objective brain.
If David told you that "you're awesome" and "you're the best" and that he's "admired you" and "learned so much from you" just know he says that to everybody all the time! Toxic Positivity.
I know them personally. For a while. I can tell the people here who know him also because they have the same understanding and perception of who they are. They are some of the most self-centered, cutthroat, attention whores I’ve ever met. I wouldn’t want to be coached by David because I believe he would never allow me to be a better athlete than him. (I’m slightly above average btw. I’m just saying he’d prioritize himself.)

You know, we assume that the Roches have many, many clients whom they are low-key scamming but, but given that they each exercise 5-10+ hours a week, have two little kids (including a new-born), put together two podcasts per week (plus articles or whatever for their Patreon), plus all of David's self-promotion/ videos/ social media/ media interviews, AND have no apparent staff, I question how they have time to "coach" anyone at all. They talk a lot about their athletes and all their coaching success, but there is no way to sign up as a prospect on their website.
I have far less clients than they claim in my line of work and there is no way I could manage the administrative burdens of my business (including setting up credit card autobilling and onboarding/ offboarding client) without support staff. Hell, I'd drown from just the client admin tech support emails without help, i.e., "how to I update my credit card"; "I forgot my password"; etc.
I wouldn't be surprised if they basically wound down the the coaching business over the last few years, maybe consult a little with a few pros they claim to "coach" and basically make a living off of their patreon subscribers and podcast/ video sponsorships.
If nothing else, the goal of his videos seems to promote David as a brand and influencer, and not David/ Megan as coaches looking to take on more clients.
There’s no way they have time to coach. Megan proclaimed on a recent podcast episode that David commits to coaching 8 hours a day. How? His training probably totals 3+ hours every day when you consider all the different warmups and shoe/gear changes and mobility and GI training/fueling. Then he reads and responds to every single comment across all of his social media channels. Then he produces his podcast and does all the interviews, as was mentioned. Then he has kids. And I assume he sleeps.
So where is this 8 hours? It seems like it’s another statement that was made to prevent people from wondering. But it just makes it worse because there’s just no way he has enough time.
Stop saying crap that gets you caught in a lie. Just stop saying it.
They want to be influencers, not coaches. They want to just talk and play. Coaching is work. They want to get rid of the “some work” altogether. All Play should be their podcast title and motto. David and Megan are brands. Megan will be chasing recognition too. Just wait. And fine. People do that. But stop telling people you’re coaching. They’ve pivoted. Go all in.

That's the whole point. They don't do real coaching for that many people because they copy and paste the same workouts and schedule en masse to save time and then once or twice a week write in a comment for feedback like "You're Awesome!" or "Huzzah!"
It's part of the scam. They will gladly take your $140 per month for this level of coaching though. Ask David and Meghan how many athletes they are currently coaching right now and see if you can get an objective answer?

EXACTLY. There is zero way, no matter how superhuman you are, there are not enough hours to do all of those things, let alone show up in any meaningful way. Wouldn't be hard to pay someone to copy/paste in all of those logs. The thing that gets me most is the amount of time spent on social media. Even if he wasn't a coach putting that much time and energy into social media shows that the only thing he cares about is being an influencer. Look at the other people he's toeing the start lines with...they have contract obligations to post but they're not responding to EVERY COMMENT on strava, instagram, twitter, patreon, email...
The only reason they still coach is for the clout and recognition. They want to be taken seriously because without that they're just a failed doctor and lawyer that find meaning in cheating on indoor workouts and telling people THEY'RE AMAZING AND THE BEST EVERRRRRR YOU'RE ALL ELITE ATHLETES!!!!!!*~*~*~*!*!**~*~*

For what it's worth I asked to be coached by him 7 years ago bc he was also coaching a friend and I never had a coach, and he passed me down to one of his underlings. How should that make me feel, haha?

it probably means that he has underlings who post feedback to their athlets and flag matters that need to be handled by David directly, such as a recent race

They are coaching at least a 100 people right now. They are all booked up and aren’t taking on any new athletes right now *unless you are a pro athlete that will give them clout.* Then they have space for you!
I am an elite cyclist and my Zone 1 power is 180-190, but I don't use that to estimate my FTP haha. That's not how it works
No it’s not, it’s usually the other way around. But David seems to be suggesting his zone 2 is extremely close (10 to 20w) to his average power for a Zwift race lasting 43 minutes. If it was truly his zone 2, his average power for that sort of race should be much higher. Which in turn suggests a pretty damned high ftp. Which he doesn’t have - as seen by the race.
I think David and Megan are probably referring to HR zones, not bike power zones. While there’s definitely some correlation and overlap between the two, power zones for runners are probably more compressed than you might see in full time cyclists even though their HR zones (though not 100% identical between the bike and running) stay relatively stable.
