The solution?: Say that slavery and genocide were in the remote past (i.e. had no important long term consequences for the descendants of the enslaved, murdered, and displaced), and were, perhaps, "not all that bad", or, at least, "complicated".
The old solution was simply to own, and to even celebrate, slavery and genocide as evidence of inherent racial/civilizational superiority. But for all their shunning of liberal niceties, the far right typically won't do this full-throatedly anymore.
