I think the girls team did this as well though. They went out hard and then lost a few places. (except Storms). But they still ended up third. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I noticed.

Insane how both of the top teams in the state had sophomores as their #1 runner - Czerwinski was 5th overall and Cupial was 7th overall. Both had big jumps from freshman to sophomore year, exciting to think about what they’ll do over the next 2 and a half years. Plus Plainfield North as a team is so young (and DGN also has young guys scoring with the capability to reload so don’t expect them to go anywhere anytime soon either). This may be just the beginning for those two teams.

A similar thing happened to a boy who was leading a boys race at the state meet 10-15 years ago. I think it was a kid from Peoria Notre Dame in the 2A race. It was a hot day on the day of the state meet and he was reportedly very dehydrated from not drinking nearly enough water. I remember reading that he had a 15-second lead or something like that with maybe a half mile to go but then ran into a tree or maybe a fence and got up and kept falling over. I’m not sure whether he even finished the race.
It was an amazing day for Illinois XC. So many fast times. Someone said detweiler was a joke but at the end it is still 3miles, on grass, and has so much history that these kids and coaches can compare from the illinois greats.
Nalley still broke the 2A state record. We would have to think his 14:00,14:03, and 14:05 collectively have to be some of the best performances on detweiler by one athlete.

Hey, the Plainfield coaches say their teams have a healthy relationship.
From the Daily Herald:
"She (Znajda) was in first place through the first two miles and just kind of ran out of juice," said Prospect coach Pete Wintermute. "My heart breaks for Veronica Znajda, she collapsed at the two and a half mile mark, she got back to her feet, but at that point she was out of the scoring."
