Wouldn’t Lagat qualify as a “big name?” I know he doesn’t have coaching experience but...

Stay away from this Job!! AD is a tool! UM hurting for money huge! No indoor to train. They will hire a new head coach from outside for sure.
If Brent May isn't going to get the job as Head Track Coach, is he staying (or are they keeping him) as Cross Country Coach?
The comments make this sound like a strange position and situation.

I assume you mean "Clint May."
It will be very interesting to see what they do. They seemingly can't do much right for XC/Track in regards to hiring correctly.
They chased off Schweyen this summer after they fired his wife from the women's basketball team (after giving her a public vote of confidence during the Big Sky Women's Bball tourney).
Previous to that, they only hired Schweyen (who had quit coaching to pursue his art career) to be the director (and Courtney Babcock to coach XC) because they messed up the hiring timeline in the summer of 2008 (I could be off by a year) and didn't make offers until August, when of course, their top 3 candidates were already committed. They also turned down a candidate because he didn't have enough college coaching experience even though he is a legend in distance running circles... Of course he is now taking his team to NCAA XC Champs this week, so that worked out well for him and not Montana.
Clint May seemed like a good hire for head cross coach as he had been a great high school coach in Montana but I'm not sure if he has the experience to lead the whole program. I really like Adam Bork and he has done very well with the multis and pole vaulters. He deserves a shot to be run the ship if he wants it. I'd also be curious if Harry Clark or Vicky Pounds would come back. Harry has done great at Carrol College and Vicky is at Clemson, who just cut part of her team.
In my opinion, Missoula is a GREAT town to live in and GREAT place for distance runners to train. You are a quick plane ride to the West Coast to compete at Mt. Sac, Stanford, Dempsey Indoor, etc. Montana as a state has great high school distance talent and if you could close the borders, you could possibly do something special in cross country. Schweyen wanted more of a well rounded program, putting a scholarship money into each event but if you tilted the scales to distance, you might be able to be a poor-man's NAU. Look at Gonzaga and what they are doing and I'd rather live in Missoula than Spokane (but GU is probably a better university depending on your program). Even though the University is struggling to keep up enrollment, the tides will turn eventually and there is money and space to build an indoor track if you ask the right people.
But WTF do I know.....
I think Travis Floeck at Idaho could be a great fit if they can get him. He does more with less at UI and certainly has the experience and ties to the Northwest that they're looking for.

Yes, Clint May, sorry, I had a Joe Biden moment there.
No politics here. Agist remarks as well.
Ole Miss update anyone?
Duke Update?

Hypothetically speaking, if Baltes left for MSU, who takes over at GVSU?
I would bet on Alan Peterson - currently asst head coach at Loyola - Chicago and distance coach
back to back women's MVC champions
was an all american at GVSU
Loyola's current head is young and likely not going anywhere soon

U of A lost millions this past year, so money is tight.
But anyway, “big name” is overrated, especially when it comes to pros or Olympians. Arizona needs someone with proven ability to resurrect a broken program.

The need to think outside the box. Too many coaches that go from program to program and they honestly are terrible coaches. It's time for a fresh new start for U of A
Baltas will not leave because GVsU going D1. Joining Missouri valley soon... stay tuned....

Oh now this will be an interesting move. If true. would def strengthen that conference on a national scale.
GVSU is not going DI. Been talk about this for 10 years. The current President does not want to be DI. Why would he? They win win win! Lots of very good DII schools have gone DI in the past only to not be very good anymore. Won't happen.
Agreed. Why move up when you already win all the time? Plus why join the Missouri Valley when you could probably join the MAC? Probably would be more competitive in the MAC.
It has nothing to do with the wishes or success of the track and field team obviously. Their D2 conference is folding. MVC or Horizon it will be.

No.
when the GLIAC split between ohio and michigan because ohio not being able to afford UP trips any more this put GVSU behind the 8ball with only ashland to contend with in football. Not only in quality opponents but games vnecceary to be eligible to compete in the playoffs. With a weaker football conference and basketball they have waited to see if the other Michigan schools could step it up, SVSU seems to have been doing well but Davenport, Calumet and Milwaukee additions haven't been strong enough to replace schools like hillsdale, findlay, tiffin, etc. gvsu will have to respond in a few years by joining horizon or MVC. Horizon makes most sense to me but they will probably go MVC because of the basketball/football driving them that direction. GVSU will win both of those conferences in many sports but won't have that same national championship energy from the last 20 years. This is fine because they will get to recruit kids with that d1 tag. also, none of this could happen, so whatever.
GVSU not moving to D1 has nothing to do with the fact that they win a lot at D2 and a move to D1 would not be as certain. Actually, in the MAC, GVSU would be competitive in most sports. It has more to do with money. Becoming a D1 school is a huge investment. There are actually a lot of D1 schools today that would be better off as D2 institutions.
