I decided to run a time trial marathon because I know that even on a terrible day I can run faster than my PR, and that way I can get more marathon experience (I’ve only done one so far). After my marathon time trial, I am going to switch to trail running. I’m going to use trail running to stay fit over the summer, maybe chase some strava segments or FKT’s.

Cmon guys, alot of people on here are making Boston out of the question or practically impossible. Its about 5 months away and we have only been on shut down for about less than 2 months. Vaccines have to go through clinical trials and I do not think it will be ready but companies are working on antibody and other drug treatments. I foresee the cases are at the plateau and expect to see drops in rates dramatically within 2 months. I wouldn't put Boston out of the picture, there is still a chance, and if there is, wouldn't you want to at least prepare for it if it does happen? Same goes for all the other city majors and races. Train now, keep on training, enjoy running, and expect for the best.

I agree here, and am actually surprised by the amount of optimism (though less so on this thread) I see in the running community about these September/October events.
To expect 75,000 athletes - almost none of them native to that region where the race is held - to come to a race is nearly unthinkable for something that needs to be ready to go by summer's end. It's actually an even harder case to make than sports where, theoretically, you're drawing mostly local fans. The World Marathon Majors (and most similarly-sized races) necessitate travel. We just won't be there by September or October.
I'm bummed - I had really hoped to smash a PR or two this year - but I think I'll be lucky to lace up for a Turkey Trot.
Two things to say. Travel from places like Ethiopia and kenya should be open by then if they isolate after arriving. I am only optimistic on elites only this year.!why would any event even consider mass gatherings before we have the vaccine?
Five months away... five months ago the virus was nonexistent for humans. A lot will change especially since two companies already have testable vaccines ready. There will be some kind of racing by then
Mass participation running events are the very last thing they will allow
to resume. No marathons or even Parkruns until well into next year, maybe not until 2022.
You'll be lucky if they let you run outdoors without a facemask in September.

This is the first smart comment I've seen in this whole thread. How tf are we supposed to know 5, 6 or 7 months out from most marathons?! 2 and a half months ago I'd never even heard of this coronavirus.
Ask this question again in August and MAYBE we can give a genuine answer rather than a bunch of idiots claiming to have psychic powers. Remember that this is the same website that contained people arguing that millions would die just a few weeks ago.

It seems really unlikely to me that large races like the majors will happen in early fall 2020 (or maybe in 2020 at all). Some large city mayors (LA, NYC) have explicitly said there will be no large gatherings this year.
I’m signed up for a small local marathon (cap of 450 runners) and I’m hopeful that it can go off because distancing seems more feasible with those numbers. I just don’t see how it’s possible with the huge races.

I hope you're right, but I don't see even small races happening. No insurance company will take on the legal liability of covid lawsuits. Every small race I'm aware of has cancelled right thru June. Unless there is some miraculous treatment or vaccine, then I wouldn't count on any road races this year. Probably no major athletic events of any kind (football, baseball, basketball) until at least 2021.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Boston run in September. One week ago at this time, nobody could imagine any states opening back up by May. On Thursday the president released the plan to open back up and a large majority of states have confirmed they are ready for phase 1 of reopening including stadiums, arenas etc. Many more states that qualify to start phase 1 but haven’t verbally confirmed they are going to enter phase 1. Very surprised to see most people not discussing that announcement here in the forums but rather still focusing on the negatives -__- . The SBA loans ran dry very quickly and economic damage will soon be irreversible for the majority of small businesses owners/employees that make up a large part of the economy. Soon most will realize the risk of going forward with normal life is a better scenario than a life with a self imposed economic collapse caged up in our houses. We will learn to wash our hands and deal with the corona much like we have our whole lives with the Flu..... The quarantine was good so we could flatten the curve and get hospitals caught up but now it’s time to transition to normal life.... even if that means a small risk of death
The people who say that there won't be racing until there's a vaccine or 2022 or something have lost their minds. The average age of people dying from covid is something like 79. At some point, way before 2022, we're just going to have to accept that life has risk and get back to business. In the meantime, therapeutic treatments for the drug are advancing rapidly, and will likely crush the mortality rate of the disease. Regarding a vaccine, we don't know when or even if a vaccine can actually be made . . . there's no realistic way that we can all 'social distance' until one is available.
All that being said, unnecessary international travel and race expos with 10,000 people in a room, race corrals with thousands shoved together, etc. are rightfully the last things that should return to normal. I have difficulty seeing the timeline on this working out for September races. It's not impossible, I just wouldn't bet on it.
I’m hopeful, but have a feeling it will be canceled, I finally after years of working qualified for 2021 in November so what does that mean for me. Will Boston keep 2020’s field or reopen for 2021? I’m 6:35 under, what’s that going to do for me if it’s cancelled

What do you mean by legal liability? They'd have to prove they contracted covid at the event and there's no way that will ever be possible.

Meanwhile in Japan, where corona is a fraction of what it is in the U.S. and Europe, five marathons in October and November with fields of 10000+ have already canceled because it's unrealistic to try to go ahead. Good luck getting U.S. and European marathons in September/October off the ground.
