The entire city is broke, the teachers are among the highest paid in the country, and yet they still want more. The problem is that the city of Chicago and state of Illinois are both broke but in order the pay teachers more money they have to increase the already astronomical taxes. Last year property taxes across the board in Cook County, where Chicago is located, increased in the double digits and it isn't as if property values are actually increasing. There has been an exodus of homeowners from Illinois over the past decade and it is almost certain to accelerate in the near future.
Eventually the city of Chicago will be forced to declare bankruptcy and all of these greedy teachers will undoubtedly take a huge hit.

You cannot compare Chicago to a suburb or to a medium size city of app. $375,000. Big city to big city. Chicago teacher pay needs to be similar to public teacher pay in N.Y.C. and L.A. I would assume cops in Chicago have similar pay to cops in N.Y.C. and L.A. The Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Chicago Option Exchange, I could go one. If an assistant manager at Footlocker asked to be transferred to Omaha, NE, I understand. Chicago is not going anywhere. Chicago is the capital of the Midwest. Pay the teachers accordingly!

There is only so much money that the city has. At some point I would like to see a district let the unions fight among themselves to figure it out.
Our Revenue is going to be X .... How do you want X to be split between staff, teachers, admins, etc.
Watch all of the unions try to figure it out on their own.

They're not going to take a huge hit. Public education is a foundational corner piece of society. And has been mentioned, there's a massive shortage of teachers.

Have you read their contract? They don't make 100k. You can top out over 100k if you've been there for 20 years and have a master's and/or doctorate. & this still isn't just about money. It's about where money goes in the city. I think it's really cool educators are together advocating for nurses, social workers, librarians, smaller class sizes, affordable housing units for homeless students, etc.

Chicago is not broke. We are giving $1.3 billion in TIF money to developers on the north side to build condos only the super rich can afford. We gave the cops an extra $33 million that was earmarked for education when they cost us north of $100 million a year in wrongful behavior type lawsuits. We give Sodexo/Aramark hundreds of millions a year to do work that was being done before Rahm cut a deal with a friend to put them in schools. The list goes on & on. It's about priorities. Sorry if you don't like the teachers trying to have a voice in that arena. Some think money, like how it's described above, should be redistributed towards hiring social workers, nurses, librarians, building affordable housing units for homeless CPS students, etc. It's weird that them advocating for that stuff affects people like you and others on here so personally. I wish ya'll would start threads on the city giving $1.3 straight to a developer instead of giving bad Chicago stereotypes. Explain our problems instead of just critiquing them.

I was a former tri-stater (CT/NJ/NY). I spend a lot of time in L.A., CA. I was a former sub-teacher in Chicago. The tax burden in city of Chicago is not in the same ball park as taxes paid by residents of N.Y.C. and/or tax burden in L.A., CA. Do not give me the no money talk.
What's most disappointing is that Jones had a legitimate shot at making the state tournament, additionally the top kid (who won the conference meet in CPS) had a good shot at being all state and he's a senior. He was decent his junior year, but has so far had a break out season. Knowing Jones, the coach is good and was trying to peak him for sectionals; trying to run well three weeks past that for footlocker/nxn would undoubtedly be tough for him, and he's out of his talent league at that point. Ultimately what I'm trying to say here is this kid, if he had any shot at getting noticed for a scholarship and running his best as a senior, its gone.
The CTU did not create the terrible conditions in the schools.
As a responsible and concerned student athlete, I would strike along with them.
And refuse to compete until the requested conditions are met, both for teachers and for students.
Is this the same Jones coach who did not run the whole varsity team a few years ago to “rest them” and it blew up on them is the Regional, not making it to Sectional?

When did anybody ever use the term "upstate IL" ? Anything outside of the Chicago metro is referred to by the natives as "downstate"; even Rockford. Are you on Rahm's NYC team?
All of the cities you mentioned were industrial powerhouses at some point in history.
The Moynihan Report of 1965 predicted all of this.
