Did he though? Look at the diagram of the new shoes. We have no way to tell whether this is a 2:06 effort in fancier shoes or not. We just don't know.

I went to bed after the commentators were talking about it like it was definitely going to happen. They had been assured it was in the bag. Not at all like Monza. Whether it was the shoes or something else, it didn't feel right.

This entire thing was a charade, and anyone who's impressed is mind-meltingly stupid.

A marinara sauce Kenyan with literal spring-loaded shoes bouncing along a pancake flat course with pacers the entire way. Oh, sponsored by a corrupt chemicals company (is there any other kind?). Just an absolute mockery. This isn't a test of human endurance. It's a test of microdosing, of Nike tech, of the limits of human gullibility and stupidity. This is the American Idol of track & field. Peak Clown World nonsense.

The "best" part? This entire thing will be moot by 2025. By then we'll see doped-up Ethiopians pogo-hopping 1:58s in Dubai.

I feel bad for so many people on this site that can't just enjoy this incredible athletic performance for what it is. It's not like Kipchoge is some random scrub. He's the best marathon runner of all time. Even with all the "advantages" for this event he still had to go out and do it and put in that kind of effort.

Watching that felt like watching some sporting ”event” in an authoritarian country - like Russia or North Korea or something.

Existing in contrived isolation with full on propaganda telling you how great and amazing it is, while giving lots of aid and rule-breaking to make it happen (but never mentioning that, or mentioning it with apologetic rhetoric). Continually telling you it was like the moon, Everest, and Bannister, like they were selling it. It was uncomfortable.

Kipchoge is a system runner who never would’ve survived in the more physical era of marathoning in the 70s and 80s. He is only good because of the new shoes. Alberto Salazar would’ve sent him home devastated had they raced in the same era. Kipchoge will never be as good as Alberto was. Tough scene for Kipchoge.

agree-great achievement--i just wish he did it in a race situation against say Kenny B for all of the marbles, rather than a contrived time-trial...it felt a little anti-climatic to be honest after the Monza sub-2 set-up; that recent Kenny B Berlin race was just as impressive-just my 2 cents...

Sub 4:40 pace for 26.2 miles is mind boggling no matter the shoes and pacing. I've never been able to run one mile that fast!

I feel it's no different than if they had taken an elite runner and doped him up for 6 or 12 months and let him lose on that course. Sub 2, yeah ... but performance enhanced.
