Thank you all for the kind words . It gives me hope that after I graduate I’ll work in my chosen field as a member of the clergy .

I was a captain of high school cross country and track teams. I never expected the other athletes were supposed to respect my authority, or even that I had any authoirity. They picked me because they thought I'd entertain them (long ago, I was funny) and keep their spirits up. And I could do math in my head. Authority? We had coaches for that.
Captain is merely a titular title. The real leader is the coach.
Could not agree more. Captains have no authority
Fake. This is not me

Can't believe it took a page and a half for this to be posted. I open this thread enthusiastically expecting it to be 3 pages of this reposted one after the other
Don't take it personally: they're just Winter Soldier fans.
How did the season go?
i hate all the captains on my team except for one. just dont be a bossy prick because i HATE that. i am not going to have some dude who's only 1-2 yrs older than me tell me how to wipe my ass. from the way it sounds you can not expect respect from anyone on the team because they are set in their ways of resenting you. you might inspire them if you run very well, that can get their attention. just focus on you. running is not a team sport because you can do very little to make them run fast. that choice to be serious is all their's (i wouldnt want it any other way)
I was a captain who supplanted a named captain because I was the best and hardest working. I led by example and just tried to help people.
It happened naturally.
Usually, there was no need for the role of a 'captain'. Some days, when we had to do something different, I would lead different workout.
These message boards continually get worse, but I'll bite. Let's be honest, captains in sports are the most overrated concept. They only exist because some people will take advice from their teammates that they wouldn't take from their coach. If this is real, which doesn't sound likely, but it sounds like there's a lord of the flies situation. Not really much you can do until the navy shows up.
I'm a captain, and pretty much the head captain on our college team. I don't go around telling everyone that though.
If you asked a random teammate who the team leader was for pretty much both teams tbh (besides the other guy/girl captains) they'd say me. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money on that actually.
This isn't because they "respect my authority." It's because I am an actual leader. I go out and lead by example. I'm the first one to practice, the last one to leave. If a freshman is struggling with schoolwork or needs a ride, I offer to help. I put the team before myself, and they know that.
Clearly you have your own personal interests ahead of the team, and trust me, they know that.
Dude you got to chill
No one's ever going to respect you if you try to force your Authority and status on them!
The whole point of being a captain is being a leader
Lead by example
Show them that you're way of doing things makes you successful
Don't try to force things on people
If the rest of the team isn't into the whole captain thing just chill about it
Just be a good teammate and friend
Work hard and lead the way with your attitude
Remember no one wants to be around a dictator. A power-hungry controlling type.
Just show people that you care about the right things and they will respond. Being a good teammate excetera
