Kejelcha won in Shanghai (with a 53.28 last lap) and Lausanne this year, beating Gebrhiwet, Barega, and Bekele in both races. But sure, he does poorly in one race and doesn't win his debut 10k, so he sucks and shouldn't go to Worlds. What a bellend you are.

The Ethiopians don't get 4 entrants unless 1 of them is Edris. The fact that an Ethiopian - anyone of them - didn't win this race really hurts them as now it's 3 + Edris. If an Ethiopian won today,they could have done 3+ today's winner.

Kejelcha hasn’t run particularly fast this outdoor season despite those wins. He’s had bad times this season, with his disastrous 3:58 mile at Pre. He’s hurt, a month from the WCs. He’s already running the 10,000m and shouldn’t be overburdened, especially since his training has been curtailed. The selectors will consider these facts.

Edris isn’t being ‘projected’ for anything. He’s a wildcard, will be on the team, and was only brought up in the first place to shut down the idea of including Kejelcha for pacing duties.

Kejelcha got hurt and suffered his first 5K defeat of the year a month from WCs. Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t broken 13 all year, and had a bad mile after his indoor WR. His only great (by his standards) time this outdoor season has come from the 10K. The selectors will favor the 3x sub-13 man Bekele, who has peaked at the right time and will enable his injured compatriot to recover for the later race.

For sure. With the injury it’s not really in anyone’s best interest to put him through the 5k rounds and the 10k. Without a clear favorite for either race I bet at least a few guys are going to put in work to snatch that 10k victory at the expense of their 5k prospects ala 2017 assuming the events are similarly scheduled.

I hope I’m wrong about Edris’ fitness because the race will be better if he’s sharp.

See if I thought the Ethiopian Federation was just going to take the top 3 Ethiopians from this race and it really looked like it cause no one wanted to bridge the gap to Cheptegai by themselves. They really screwed up, because between 5 of them, none of them got the win so now they HAVE to give Edris the 4th spot, right?

Honestly, this race was so crazy that if I was the selectors I wouldn't even use it for the selection criteria. It just gave no information. This is going to be a very very tough decision to make.

If it were up to me, I give it Gebrehewit for being the fastest today, and winning the DL London 5k literally days after winning the trials 10k over Berega and Kijelcha.

Then I'd pick T Bekele. He's the fastest by time and after that 12:52 in Rome he can back 5 days later and ran 12:57 leading much of the race after the rabbit dropped. Good indication of rounds.

The final spot is going to Kijlecha for being undefeated going into this race over 5k including 2 DL wins. We already know he can go 12:46. You could argue Berega, but he has questionable championship experience after not even medalling at World JR's or the African games last year. Plus he beat Kijlecha in the 10k trials so he could be a very good gold medal threat since he'll be fresh going into the 10k.

Multiple races (i.e. two) and Gebrhiwet miscounted the laps in one of them IIRC. Kejelcha’s record against them is neutral this season, but his two most recent (and most important) races against them were defeats.

Remember the shift from Haile to Bekele's reign? How BOTH Bekele and Sihine first instead of breaking away when Haile started to fall back actually slowed down to make it possible for him to catch up. Only after he pretty much signaled to the whole world that "I won't be able to hang on, but thanks anyway guys" did the take off for silver and gold.

Abebe Bikila did the same thing in 1968 when he realized he wasn't gonna win a third straight marathon gold, told his support guy that "you have to win this race instead off me" and sent him off for the gold.

The unknown here is that we don't know if Kejelsa joined the NOP with or without the Ethiopian Federations blessing. If he did it without he's far less likely to be on their team unless he's clearly ranked number one in the world based on time this year by a lot.
