How high do you think Simone Biles could go if she could adapt her gymnastics to the high jump and the technique was legal?

I say she could adapt this to jump 6"11' easily.

The tumbling pass in the video below is actually the one that would be more efficient in the high jump. If the "run up" with the back handsprings were legal, even with out the springy floor, she would be able to clear 7 1/2 feet easily. Obviously it would take some work on the "steps" and timing so she goes over the bar at the correct moment, but a high jumper has to map out those steps anyway.

The experiment the other way around of thinking world class speed would was all you needed to be a great NFL receiver didn't work out for those who didn't know the game. Renaldo Nehemiah found out the hard way about that. One of the first things a receiver needs to recognize if it is a man or zone coverage. Then you apply the principal, run through man and setup between zone. Unfortunately for him he tried to run through zone coverage and was leveled. With today's more protective rules regarding defenseless player and such, I wonder how successful he would be

Well, why isn't it legal? If the high jump is about who jumps the highest, why not let them use whatever method they can to do so? Obviously not aided with springboards or special shoes or anything else.

That’s right. The sport has transformed so much since Nadia’s time you can’t really compare the two. Nadia was the one who sent it in that direction. She was really the first one to train at such an intense level and such a young age. Bela Karolyi has said that the only gymnast he coached who never broke down and cried from the intensity of the workouts was Nadia. Adding that level of athleticism on top of her natural grace just blew everyone away. The stuff she did was easier than what they do today, but certainly not easy. Nadia made it look so fluid and graceful that it is beautiful to watch even today.

Simone is the culmination of the athleticism that started with Nadia. Simone not only does stuff that is so much harder than what was done in 1976, it is so much harder than what anyone else can do today. It’s like everyone else is running flat 400s in 50 seconds, and Simone is running a 400 over men’s high hurdles in 49.

Just compare her vertical to elite high jumpers. That would tell most of the story.

My guess is she would not be an elite jumper but I could be wrong.

Gym floors and high jump pads are not similar.

Wait, what? How big do you think the poles are?!

The taller you are, the higher you can hold on the pole. Eventually there is a point of diminishing returns... the tallest guys struggle to swing upside down as effectively as the shorter guys. The sport is pretty accommodating to a variety of body types.

But at 4'8", it would be a serious impediment to world class success. I'm sure if Simone seriosly tried pole vaulting she would pick it up quickly and do quite well. But she would never come anywhere near the caliber of pole vaulter as she was gymnast. Her height absolutely would hold her back.

Do you challenge my statement that women elite pole vaulters are strong women usually 5'7" to 6'1" (140 to 165) pound range? You stated Simone Biles' size would hold her back.

First of, Simone could easily score perfect 10's on a routine as simple as Nadias. Gymnastics is no longer scored out of 10 anymore for that reason, there is a max score that is calculated based on difficulty, and simone would probably double Nadias even if she scored perfectly.

2nd, the "physics" of simone biles while on a rod floor is impressive, but also specific. As I mentioned early, I cleared 3 feet higher on a rod floor than over an actual high jump bar. It's basically a very firm trampoline. I don't think simone could clear 5'6 due to her height.

Yes, height is is an advantage. I'm not denying that. What I stated was that she has the speed to bend the pole and the requisite strength to ride it. I'm aware that height- length of levers- gives one an advantage in most events.

hahahaha she's barely five foot tall. Get real. The floor is like jumping off a trampoline. Plus, if we're going to get technical, she's a two footed power jumper. Ya need to find a NBA or female basketball player that is more of a one footed jumper.

Simone has never lost a single all-around gymnastics title or floor title (2013 - 2019)! And she has won them all by multiple falls. She is better at the floor exercise than not only all women to ever compete but also all currently competing American men (and the USA is a decent men's gymnastics country). Gymnastics is a physically demanding sport, so it is insane that she is better than most elite men. No woman in any physically demanding sport has ever achieved anything even remotely equivalent.

If Ema Couburn started running as fast as Evan Jager that would be a comparable achievement to what Biles is doing in gymnastics. So you would have to ask yourself if a woman started running an 8:01 steeplechase would you call her less dominant than Bolt? I don't think so.

At the world championships, Bolt lost in the 100m in 2017 (and arguably in 2011). In the 200m Bolt lost in 2007.

Meh, not interesting anymore. After seeing that thread about Whitlock I realized that guys like that are up in the air far higher than Biles. To say that Biles is better than any male is plain retarded. Kind of like saying Flanagan is much more of an impressive runner than Rupp.

You are an idiot. Biles objectively throws harder sills than most elite male gymnasts. If Shalane consistently ran a 2:04 marathon I'd be happy to say she was better than Rupp, but she hasn't.
