How high do you think Simone Biles could go if she could adapt her gymnastics to the high jump and the technique was legal?
I say she could adapt this to jump 6"11' easily.

Sorry. Those gymnastic floors are spring loaded. Not that she isn't extremely impressive.

Even without the floor, doing a round off handspring into the jump would make for an interesting technique for high jump. They could call it the FlipFlop. Is it legal?

No. Two footed takeoffs are not allowed in the high jump.
Track tends to outlaw gymnastics-like elements from everything except the pole vault. Cartwheels are not allowed in the shot put... flips are not allowed in the long jump...
And yeah the gymnastics floor has springs underneath it. It is much less bouncy than a trampoline, but definitely more bouncy than a track surface.
Simone Biles is better at gymnastics than Usain Bolt was at sprinting. She is legit the GOAT.
But she would be a crappy high jumper because she is very very short. Even if she jumped well over her height, it still wouldn't be that high.
A better second sport for her to pick up would be diving. I don't see her having world class potential in track and field, not even the pole vault.
She is the best gymnast but she is 4 feet 8 inches. She looks like she is jumping higher than she actually is jumping.

when she is perfectly horizontal in the air towards the top of her jump she is 100% above the women's WR height. not even close. but yeah it's a spring loaded floor and not a legal takeoff, the latter being a bit of a stupid rule.
can one of you ask her to try it via twitter or something? not on the springloaded floor, but outside. if she broke the world record, even if it's with a technically illegal takeoff, that would be so awesome!

Those camera angles are something else. All of those female gymnasts look big and bulky on TV but if you see them in person, it's crazy how small they are.
104 pounds on a 4 foot 8 frame is going to look big I guess. But damn, she is legally a midget.
There was a story (pre-social media so it was written word in a running magazine and back then there were a few).
When track first went pro, supposedly, a bunch of NBA and NFLers were training with a track club.
They weren't as good as they thought they'd be.
Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot/Disc are physically different than those sports.
I think Americans tend to think that a football/basketball player can automatically transfer their skills to track and field.
That isn't always the case, just like a track athlete can't automatically transfer their skills.
She is exceptionally skilled and talented at gymnastics, the best of the millions who spend hours a week doing it, but do not tell me that she is better at gymnastics than Bolt at sprinting. Everyone in the world tried to sprint at some point. He was faster than anyone in world history that we know of.
I was a gymnast and track athlete, I high jumped 6'2 and I jumped over 9 feet on the floor.
You could go set the WR on a trampoline. Why is this even being discussed?
Take a current high jumping female in T&F and put her on a trampoline, she'll jump 30% higher than Simone.
Simones head seems to be deformed. Is it all the HGH and other hormones/drugs pumped into her that's causing this? Do they not fear the consequences?

Could Simone jump anywhere close to as high as she can in that video but using the regular track surface used for a HJ?

104 lbs @ 4'8" with very little body fat IS pretty bulky!
Blow her up to scale at 5'10" and that's 203 lbs!

Two footed take off not allowed, but if it was- even without spring loaded floors the high jump record would be higher than it is. Just the Javelin record has been broken with a spin technique- also not allowed. For that matter a somersault long jump would break the record too. Funny how we just believe that this how how high, or far or long the human can jump or throw, but really it isn't and we have restricted the rules.
https://perryponders.com/2015/04/21/in-1956-a-man-broke-the-current-javelin-world-record-by-spinning-it-around-like-a-discus/Other than the spring loaded floor and technique that would be illegal for the high jump, there is one other important point. High jumping isn't about getting your body a certain distance above the ground. It is about clearing a bar at a particular position. If the high jump was judged by using a slow-motion camera to determine the highest point that your body cleared then the WR (and the whole approach to the sport, no doubt) would be different.
Semi-related question, I do wonder why the high jump doesn't allow various gymnastic moves. You have to take off from one foot, for example. Why? Why not leave that up to the athlete? Why not allow hand-springs and such? What would the record be if different techniques were allowed?
Years ago there was a very good USSR gymnast who looked downright slim and towered over the others. Then I found out her height: 5'6".

I remember seeing photos of Nastia Liukin with Shawn Johnson and thinking Nastia was really tall. Turns out she was 5'3" and towering over Shawn who was well under 5 feet.
Simone Biles is the GOAT, but she lacks the grace and artistry of older generation gymnasts like Nadia and this has nothing to do with race.
