The British Athletics Federation are reviewing the incident. I doubt if anything will come of it other than a warning. This was out of character, everybody knows Kyle is a good guy and a number of witnesses state that the official was being a jobsworth and even putting his hands on him. Not that I am excusing it, but it would be a terrible decision to suspend him, causing him to probably miss Doha after being robbed in the last world championships. I don't think the official himself is kicking up a fuss and probably just wants to move on.

Obviously nobody at european athletics or IAAF is going to ask our opinions. But if they did, I would suggest a very short ban. Maybe a ban in effect until british champs.

I'd also discipline the official. If multiple witnesses or video confirms the report that he followed an athlete and grabbed his arm as he was walking away, he should have his credentials to officiate removed for a period of time.

Anyone watching the video can clearly see he wasn't 'stopped by another runner'. He pushes the official away who had been following him and grabbing his arm, and if anything another runner holds back the official from continuing the altercation.

The official is solely at fault and should be suspended. Grabbing Langford's arm is straight out assault. If a deranged old man is attacking you, you are justified in using reasonable force to defend yourself. Langford should be applauded for his discretion in defusing the situation by keeping the criminal an arm's length away.

I witnessed the official grabbing Kyle in the first instance. There were 20 to 30 people running the back straight warming up with strides. The official was flustered because he had no control of the back straight. He picked on Kyle saying that "he should know better" and Kyle told him that he didn't have time to argue. Kyle walked off because he really needed to get to the other side of the track for the race and the official shouted more and walked after him.

After this point I couldn't hear anything as they were out of earshot but witnessed the rest that has been widely reported.

It was a shame that it ended the way it had. I was amazed at how quickly it went from Kyle being singled out, this official shouting about Kyle being disqualified and then the incident at the end. If the final altercation hadn't been physical then this official would have unfairly disqualified Kyle 2 minutes before the race for absolutely nothing.

The official should have made his way to the track referee after the first disagreement to discuss the matter and not threatened Kyle with disqualification.

I don't condone Kyle interacting physically with the official at the end of this. He shouldn't have. However, the pressure of the situation was the cause.

Isn’t this guy supposed to be an athlete? He should be able to defend himself from an old man touching his elbow better than grabbing his throat.

He didn't apologise. His coach or agent apologised for him when he was contacted by the media. (The apology took >24 hours, but

English officials have always been a giant pain in the ass.

He should have kept his cool, but that old fart was shirley just looking to wave his magic wand around and show how important he is.

To be honest I'm sick and tired of these full time athletes parading around like they are superstars and living their lives on social media, they don't seem to realise how easy they have got it. It's the footballer mentality coming across in track and field, the big 'Here I am'... the facts are that guys with full time jobs were running as quick as these boys 30 years ago with little sponsorship and no funding. They need to realise how lucky they are and show some respect to the people who allow the events to happen, the volunteers. If he's doesn't this to a football referee he'd be looking at a lengthy ban and significant fine.

As a libertarian, I believe Kyle should be given a lighter sentence because he comes from a affluent background and could not possibly understand the impact of his actions. He has a lot of potential and his whole life ahead of him; we should not let this one mistake ruin all of that because of a harsh punishment. Everyone makes mistakes.

Agreed. The official was getting violent and Kyle had every right to defend his person/his family. I would have certainly pulled out my cc in that situation. Too bad it is illegal in socialist utopia Europe!!!
