I just happened to rewatch the 2008 Mens marathon, and the stadium was full. In the commentary they even talked about the "stuff" going on in the stadium while the race was on.
Also, don't the closing ceremonies follow? The mens marathon is the last event isn't it?
people camp out for days on Alpe d'Huez just for the chance to see maybe 200 metres of a 160 kilometre race.
sports fans be crazy.
Solved: the closing ceremonies immediately follow the end of the men's marathon. Google is hard.

So people think I'm an idiot for wondering if it's true that a 68,000 seat stadium will be filled at 6 in the morning with people watching the beginning and end of a marathon of which you'll see 600 meters or so? I'm amazed if 68,000 people are going to sit in a stadium to see 1.4% of a race at 6 in the morning.
But that's really cool if true.
We think you're an idiot for a lot of reasons. This one is a little further down the list.

Anyone got a theory on this?
My theory is that you don't understand how ticket lotteries work.

Same day, same venue, 13 hours apart.
Not the same audience.
I was in the stadium for the start and finish of the men’s marathon in Atlanta in’96. It was embarassing. Maybe 1000 for the start and I’m guessing 3-4000 for the finish. I had a ticket for way up in the stands, and moved down to about the 5th row right at the finish line. Got some incredible pictures.
