Sydney Masciarelli will be better than Katelyn Tuohy

Sydney is in her 2nd track season....Katelyn is in her 5th. This was Sydney's first ever XC season (she won footlocker) and this was Katelyn's 5th. Of course Katelyn is going to have faster personal bests right now because she's been running for twice as long and is currently running likely twice the mileage (all accounts indicate that including cross training and pool time, Katelyn is close to 70 miles a week at a very fast pace).

The workout wednesday that milesplit did of Sydney was 3x1000. She's winning national championships off of 3x1000. That's insane.

Sydney improved a lot this outdoor season, Katelyn took a significant step backwards. Usually when an athlete like Katelyn struggles in a season, the struggles continue into the next season. Sydney made it to nationals healthy and in great shape. Katelyn couldn't.

Katelyn didn't take a significant step back this season. She won every race she was in by a big margin

Your comments are silly for a lot of reasons but the biggest is that no one can predict what the future holds for any Runner.

We can only go by what they have achieved so far

Also you're really screwing things. Sydney has run for more than two seasons and no one knows exactly how these girls train. You're seeing things the way you want to. Bottom line Caitlin is running a lot faster times

Sorry should say skewing things. Anyway Kaitlyn has 4 National records and has one every race she's in recently by big margins

She didn't take a step back. She didn't have an awesome outdoor season by her standards but she still had some really fast times. She ran something like a 4:35 mile at Penn relays if you adjust for the fact that she was carrying a baton. I think she ran a 437 split. And she also ran a 9 53 to mile.

Anyway I think it's better just to appreciate what all these Runners do and to wish them luck rather than trying to build one up against another in clearly an exaggerated and biased fashion

Finally I'll just say Kaitlyn ran 10 seconds faster at 1500 then Sydney three times this outdoor season

She was also 20 seconds faster at the 2-mile

She was 4 seconds faster in the 800

So considering that she was still the same or faster at every time this outdoor season it's really silly trying to build Sydney up as some one who is destined to be better. Again you have no idea especially with teenage girls how they'll progress so bottom line again Caitlin gets the attention she does for good reason for National records and almost always big margins of victory

If she is so superior, she could have extended her season one more week and sleepwalked her way to 2 or 3 national titles, but she chose not to. Sydney showed up and won two events. She can only beat the people who are there - something she's done all year.

Both girls are extremely talented, but I would not base a lot of impressions off of what we “think” Masciarelli’s training is. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of these top girls don’t tell everything they are doing in their training. They would rather come off as undertrained to college coaches and critics, like Letsrun. If anything, we should be impressed that Katelyn is being honest about the intensity and dedication in her training.

Congratulations to her young coach at her prep school for coaching a now 3 time National Champion.

Sydney comes from a running family and has raced in middle school. It is just off the radar. She no doubt adheres to a training routine involving nutrition, strength and yes mileage. What great training partners with an older D1 runner sister, and a twin brother who can push you and support you. I think she is set up to achieve great things. So an impression that she is undertrained is just not accurate. She is humble is all. And so are the people around her. Congrats to her.

This reminds me of arguments a few years ago between people who were sure that Peyton Manning was the best QB ever and people who were sure that Tom Brady was the best QB ever. Or maybe an argument between two children who both think they have the smartest dads in the world.

Actually Katelyn did not run a faster time than Sydney in the 3k or 5k this outdoor season.

If Katelyn was confident she'd win, she would have raced at New Balance.

That workout, in her coach's words was about learning the pace so when they got into a race they would have a feel for how fast to run. The coach also said that they had a hard week of workouts leading up to it. So I would not assume that was a typical workout for Sydney.

And for all you know she got up early that day before school to run 4 miles, and followed it up the next day with an 8 mile run. You can't draw broad conclusions from one single workout that happened to be taped and made public.

The Brooks men's mile ran faster mile/1500 times than the 2016 Olympic final... Apparently Brooks had a stronger field in the mile than the 2016 Olympic 1500, too?

Saying that nobody can predict the correct outcome is ridiculous. There are only a few possibilities which means that many people will correctly predict the future. I predict that Tuohy will disappear in college. You can't tell me that I will be incorrect because that would require you to be predicting a different future.

Ah, yes, the world record indoor 2 mile. They must have really had to hunt around to find that record. Doesn’t get anymore globally dominant than the indoor 2 mile, that’s for sure. We’ll all remember where we were the moment we heard that record went down. The world record for the number of apples thrown at windows is currently held by Mo’s kids. Personally, I’d rate that record higher.

Your post implies:

1) Masciarelli's young coach is better than Touhy's coach, but you have not met either one.

2) Her supposedly having great training partners and family members give Masciarelli an advantage, but there are countless great runners that had neither of those things.

3) She is concerned about nutrition and does strength training and runs mileage. Tuohy has a different approach to running?

4) Compared to Tuohy, Masciarelli is humble. What makes you think Tuohy is arrogant? How do you know the people around Masciarelli are humble when you've never met them? How do you know the people around Tuohy aren't?

You have no information at all to come to your conclusion, but you are good at reading the minds of people you've never met.

You only as good as your last race. One girl is a recent national champ while the other chose not to compete. National champ is better than no finish.
