Well she did PR at 9:01 earlier in the year so that is progress. Give her a break--can't be at the top of your game all the time and every season. Having said that, I don't she her making the qualifying standard for the world championships or olympics anytime soon.

How many? If you are suggesting that being thin makes you slower, you are crazy. There aren't many 200 pound distance runners. But every good female distance runner is less than 120 pounds.

Salazar has learned his lessons about young talent. Post Mary Cain, he has worked at improving established talent rather than developing young talent. Centrowitz, Rowbury, Brazier, Murphy, Hassan, Klosterhalfen. I don't expect Tuohy to show up at NOP for many years, if ever.
The article notes that she looks "puffy" from allergies, but she looks a bit heavier to me too.
As has been mentioned girls often develop very differently to boys. Could be she is "filling" out and struggling with a natural body/shape change. Said she had been to the Doctor with stomach issues too.

Most likely food allergies. Believe me they are more than just a nuisance, they can wreck you like nothing else. They interact with/trigger pollen allergies, which would explain why she runs much better in Fall and indoor than outdoor.

You know what would be really helpful in threads about young female runners? Older female runners who have gone through similar progressions and experiences. I'm sure Katelyn would appreciate all of the insight from the LRC gang on her mentality, her weight, her training etc., but boy it sure would be nice to hear from an actual female runner. I'd even take that psycho self-proclaimed high school girls coach from the other thread on this topic.
Robert, how can we encourage more experienced female runners to post here? Or perhaps they already do, but don't want to explicitly weigh in? I guess there's nothing wrong with LRC just being a "boy's club" though.
There is no older runner who was like her when young. Except Mary Cain.
Mostly this thread is (ostensibly) adult men talking about a HS girl runner's weight. Seriously consider getting help.
Another example of the American high school system burning athletes out with excessive racing. Something has to be done about the system or we will continue to see great talents burn out.

It is not the system, it is the coaching. Nobody forces any coach to over train or over race their kid. There is no one holding a gun to a coaches head saying you have to triple the kid to score points or you have to race 50 times in 9 months, or you have to chase this record or that, it is on the coaches shoulder period.

+1-bingo-always a bit of a concern when you see these athletes doing high level racing at 12 or 13 and peaking too early--never a bad idea to play other sports prior to your Jr/Sr years of HS to take the stress off the body of only doing miles--ie. Soccer, basketball or swimming to supplement the running-look at last year's Footlocker champion-she did soccer in the fall of her freshman year and her FL title was her first year of cross-still plays hoops I believe in the winter; no sense going too hard until you are 17 or 18--my 2 cents anyway...
Take a lesson from Karissa Schweizer. She developed slowly running low mileage and not doing postseason meets or any real travel. She ended up as one of the best college runners of all time and now has a nice pro contract.
in NYS we have profession coaches at the HS level. These coaches know everything the pro's do and have their athletes do it. Mileage, lifting, ladder drills, plyo's. Just everything. More is better. And they start them all in by 8th grade. They extend every season chasing nationals. Thats 3 seasons a year in NY. This girl hasn't had a break since she signed up for track. Ran nationals in 7th grade, that means her season was extended till June 15th or so every year. She has extended her season in XC to Decemeber every year, minimal break as the indoor season starts, then milrose, indoor nationals, then penn relays, then states and outdoor nationals till June 15th or so. Her first race in XC tends to be the first week in september... this kid has had no down time. It's ok to finally end a season early and actually get a break.

She allegedly gained 5 pounds. The first step would be to find her Twinkies stash.
we dont believe in slow development in NYS. We go all in and then blame the college coaches when the kids don't improve or get worse.

The only advice from/about LRC that she or any other young female runner needs comes from Sara Hall:
"Avoid LetsRun like the plague."
This thread is a perfect example of why.
